    Re: Ultimate Protectant on tires

Sorry guys, I've been a little preoccupied lately. i had a total knee replacement a little over a month ago and only very recently have i had a chance to wash the truck as it sat in the garage for quite a long time.

I basically drove the truck daily for a week and a half before I parked it for bit. It didn't get washed, but best i could tell it did pretty well in that time frame. Still had product on the tires, but the shine had depreciated mostly due to road grime and brake dust accumulation. When i finally got around to being able to drive again, i just ran it through a tunnel wash, so the tires really never got cleaned properly. Still looks ok, but hard to really tell without cleaning the tires as they should be.

I would not hesitate to use UP on tires again because of the look it gives. I think it will outlast #40 just from a visual standpoint and certainly last as long as most of the other Megs tire products with the possible exception of the new Endurance line products. But since I haven't used Endurance since they changed to the new formula I can't comment.

Where I bought my tires they gave me what they use on theirs as I like the sheen..just like a new tire .. not that fake wet look.
      A flat black new look.
It's also water based. I was told that petroleum based tired shines are not good for the rubber, in the long run they end up eating them.

      What do you think?

I don't think a petroleum (or solvent) based dressing will eat away at tires any more than it would any other rubber trim. The sidewalls of my last two sets of tires far outlasted the tread, despite biweekly applications of Hot Shine. Like most folks here, my tires get thoroughly scrubbed every time I wash my car (Super Degreaser @ 4:1), but that's more to prevent a buildup of dressing from accumulating.

With the amount of people on MOL, if this was an issue, I think we would have heard of it by now.

There are a really long post made by one of the Meguiars employees a while ago about using petroleum based products on tires -- which basically boiled down to saying it is not harmful.

I have never heard of anyone having long term issues with tire dressings, and all the best tire dressings are petroleum based.
