Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
Ya and working in the sun to. I know its probably for video purposes but still. Tomorrow is supose to be a good day but it calls for rain Thursday so I might as well wait for Friday evening or hit it early Saturday to try to get those swirls and haze out. I am attending the 4 Wheel Jamboree in Indianapolis later Saturday so I will hit it first thing in the morning.

Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
I'm new to using a DA, but I noticed this also. Not only did he appear to be moving the machine to fast, but initially the product was not spread quickly around his working area at a slow machine speed. I like to spread it around quickly using a speed of 2 or 3 before speeding up the machine and slowing the motion way down.

Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
Well, having just watched these videos, I have to question the technique displayed, particularly with the second Ultimate Compound video: (1) the PC is set for speed 4 but I would think that speed 5 would be more productive; (2) the man polishing does not appear to be applying any pressure; he is simply allowing the machine to glide over the surface; (3) he is moving the polisher too fast; (4) he needs to work a smaller space.
I know I'm a detailing dunce but those are my observations.

Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
Here are two videos I found on youtube done by Meguiars.
The first one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rf1t...eature=related
looks just like what I have. I also have the spider web effect but also a little hazy, but no where near this one where they are using Ultimate Compound:
Just to give you an idea. Mine is no where even close to the second video. I would definitely be on someones rear if mine looked like that.

Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
Thanks again guys. I will was and post some pics for ya. Hopefully the sun comes out for me so you can see it clearly. Mike with regard to the swirlx and the scratchx what are the differences in these. I noticed in the Mercedes tutorial scratchx was used on buffer swirl and not swirlx. Like I stated before the haze looks nothing like the Mercedes. Thanks again guys.

Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
Got your PM, Justin, but rather respond to that we'll respond here in hopes it helps out others later on.
We still aren't 100% clear on exactly what the defect in the paint is - haze or holograms or something else. Haze and holograms are very different issues, potentially - holograms only come from rotary buffing and can be tricky to remove if they're very deep. Haze can come from a wide variety of sources, including a paint cleaner that is just too aggressive for a very soft paint, and generally appears as just dull and lifeless paint.
Knowing which you have will help to formulate a game plan. But, from what you've said thus far, the defects don't seem to be really terrible so we'd suggest going with the SwirlX first. But do yourself a favor and do a test spot first. Select an area where the issue is most noticeable and lay a length of masking tape through the middle of that area. Use SwirlX as per the directions, wiping off when finished, then remove the tape and get the car back into the lighting needed to reveal the defect to its fullest. What has the SwirlX accomplished? Is the finish noticeably improved, or only slightly? If noticeably improved, or fully corrected, great! Apply a coat of wax and call it a day (well, after you repeat this process on the entire vehicle!!) If only slightly improved, do a second application of SwirlX and evaluate again. If that still isn't getting the result, then step up to UC. If the first application of SwirlX appears to have accomplished literally nothing, then your paint may be fairly hard and you should step up to UC right away.

I'm going to try and fix it myself. Like I said its minor compared to the Mercedes tutorial.I'm having difficulty finding where the button is to post pics. They is a very light having when the sun hits it just right. Up close you can't tell.
Is it recommended to clay bar more then once a year? I just need to push the reset button on this car and start from scratch.

Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
2010Fusion, did you decide to return the car to the vehicle or to try to fix the holograms yourself?
Please post some pics of the hazing. It's impossible for the MOL brethren to provide reliable guidance in the absence of visual documentation.
Don't worry about rubbing through to the metal with the Ultimate Compound by hand application, but whether or not it's the right product for the task can only be determined by trial and error. Always do a TEST SPOT first: How to do a Test Spot.

Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
Is there anyway that the Ultimate compound could be to abrasive and I should just use the scratchx first a couple of applications? I just want to get it back to showroom shine without rubbing all the way to the metal. Should I use a polish between the cleaner and the wax step?
I guess I have just been to use to the wash and wax old school method and never really got into the science of it. I do really appreciate everyones help though.

Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
Thanks Davey I can get a DA polisher but I am limited on my shade and my car will not fit into my garage for all the stuff in it since we have moved to a new location. I just don't want to over work the paint with the Ultimate Compound that I have. I always have friends with older cars that are in need of using it. I alos need to pick up some of the Gold Class car wash. I have been using the Deep Crystal wash but I think its time to step up a notch. Thanks..

We hear of this happening all the time with dealerships. When they attempt to correct the car, they usually use a sealant or glaze with heaps of fillers and "fill in" or hide the defects. It will look great when they hand it back to you, but after a few washes, the defects will reappear and you'll be back to square one. It is unlikely they will then correct it again, since the car looked good when they handed it to you and you accepted it.
This sort of thing is easy to fix yourself, especially since you describe the holograms as being light. I would start with ScratchX 2.0 (SwirlX is very mild). If you can get your hands on a DA polisher or can afford to buy one, that would really help too.
Good luck...

Re: Buffer swirl and Ultimate compund
The more I look at other postings the more I believe these are just light holograms. They are not anywhere near severe.. Just needing direction on swirlX or scratchX. The finish feels real smooth after washing so is there need for clay baring??
