  • Black convertible top-GC trim detailer?

It seems most products I've tried (like NXT tech protectant) don't last very long on my vert top. I had been using mother's protectant preserves (and only because they used to sell a vert top cleaner and that's what it recommended), but I can't find it anymore (I know they stopped making the vert top cleaner, I emailed them about it). I've got a vinyl top, not cloth. I've been asked to help a fellow Mustanger with their very faded black top as well. Mine was pretty dull and dry when I picked up my car and it was only a year old (it was a rental, so I'm sure it wasn't conditioned)-this one is worse. It's a 98 and I don't think it's ever been conditioned, and barely cleaned (the car was so dirty when he bought it, there were streaks in the paint! We took care of that though).

ANYWAY, I got to thinking the GC trim detailer does a fantastic job on the black plastic cowl cover, mirrors, etc and I wonder if anyone's tried it on a vinyl top. I don't have a bottle handy, but am planning my "attack" on the 98 tomorrow in preperation for it being at a show in Sunday. I was thinking through each step to be sure I had all the products at home and didn't have to run out and get anything when I thought about the top and my nearly gone supply of protectant (that I don't want to share, lol). I know I've never seen the marine canvas products around (I would have picked them up when we had our boat), so I need something I have access to this weekend.

Nxt isnt really made for outdoors, so it will wear off fast.

Gold Class Trim Detailer or All Season Dressing would be the best bets... clean first, apply, let sit, and buff off any excess.

K, so you're thinking the GC trim detailer would work as well? I dont' know why in 7 years I've never thought to try it-maybe because I had something that worked.

Well, it is basically like Nxt as far as being for plastic, vinyl, rubber surfaces.... but it is made more for the outdoors. Still will wear off of course, but should last a bit longer.

I think ASD tends to be considred the longest lasting.

I can't say as I've ever seen ASD. Of course, the local parts place just discontinued Deep Crystal paint cleaner, so maybe it's getting to be time to order direct from Meg's anyway. Both my Mustang and the 98 will be garage kept, so it should last pretty well (if the cowl/mirrors are any indication).

Is this a canvas/fabric top or a vinyl top?

If it's a canvas/fabric top then use our Canvas Protectant, if it's a vinyl top then you could use the Gold Class Trim Detailing if you like, it's not intended for tops but the materials are similar for what it is intended to be used on.

Also M40 is a long time favorite for vinyl.

In a VERY long overdue reply, it's vinyl. I did use the GC trim detailer, and it worked wonderfully. In fact, I've now begun to use it on my top as well.

The 98 cleaned up very well. It's not completely done, in that every inch has been gone over enough times to be in a maintain and keep in proper condition mode, but it's come along nicely. It took second in the judged show we were prepping for, and has since had much more done to clean it up (like cleaning all the mouse droppings and shells out of the frame rails). Thinking back, I should have taken more pics. I might do that for the undercarriage, we got half done before old man winter came. It's a yellow car and you'd never guess by how dirty the underbody was!

I'll try not to, lol. Got way distracted by trying to build a business while working a day job and still having time to detail, clean the house, eat, and well, occasionally, sleep!
