So is the #80 used in place of a polish? I would think not, but I'm obviously not familiar with this. Basically what I am getting at is the polish just an extra step that may give me better results or the same step as the #80.

Part of it may be getting to understand Meguiars terminology, as different companies use the same words for different things.

For Meguiars, a cleaner is a product that will remove dirt from the paint, and some will have enough abrasiveness to remove swirls. Some are mild, some are stonger.

A polish/glaze is a product that puts oils onto the surface to help fill in pores and imperfections, so you get a glossy, refelective surface.

Then a wax/sealant is for protection.

The other thing to consider of course is that all-in-one kinds of products tend not to be quite as effective as a product designed for each individual step.

So, all that said.... #80 is a cleaner/polish, so has both properties, will clean, remove light swirls, and add polishing oils. Some people follow up #80 with the #7 Show Car Glaze for extra looks, some folks dont see enough of a difference to take the extra time. It may be something for you to play with in the future, but not super important.

Meguiar's is unique among the other options on the market in that we offer two types of polishes, cleaner/polishes and pure polishes.

Cleaner/polishes have the ability to remove defects using diminishing abrasives, while pure polishes do not. Meguiar's pure polishes are non-abrasive and are primarily for adding gloss and beauty.

If you haven't already, then take a few moments to read the below article and focus on the section on polishes as it goes over this fairly in-depth.

I believe that I understand now. Since I am removing very light swirls, I need to use the #80. If I didn't need to remove the swirls, then I could just use a pure polish like the #7 show car glaze, is this correct. If so how often should one use the polish as opposed to just wax only?

Yes... if you want to. Polishing with a pure polish is an optional step, that is you don't have to do it, it depends on how car crazy you are and what you're hoping for and looking for in results. If you paint is clean, free of bonded contaminants you can go straight to wax. Some people, they type of people that we would car serious enthusiasts, the type of people that love their car and are willing to do the extra available steps to make the paint look as good as possible will use a pure polish. But you don't have to.

Also, if you use M80 first, you can actually skip using a pure polish because there are plenty of polishing oils in the M80 to accomplish the same goal. This is one of the reason the M80 is such a "Go to" product, it will accomplish most of what most people want to accomplish and then you can go straight to wax.

If you mean a cleaner/polish, then as often as needed to remove swirls and scratches.

If you mean a pure polish then as often as you like, as often as needed to make your car's paint look good to the level you expect and prefer.

Meguiar's polishes are water soluble, so they don't protect in the way a wax does, the idea is to apply the polish and then sand-which it in with a coat of wax.

Get your supplies and spend some time working on your car with them and you should be able to come up with a regimen that suits your needs, wants and expectations.

Ok, I used the G100 this weekend following meguiar's procedure to remove swirls. I am very, very pleased!!! I do have a question. I did read that using the M80 either too long, or not long enough can/will not produce the desired results. My question is what might I experience by not using the M80 long enough?

If you dont use it long enough, swirls can remain.

If you use it too long, you can end up 'dry buffing', basicaly rubbing the foam right on the paint.

But #80 is pretty easy going, you were able to tell when the polish had broken down, started turning to a more greasy look?

I feel that I used it long enough, but not too long. The swirls came out just fine, but it seemed like the finish was not as glass like as I expected. Don't get me wrong, the swirls, and fine cobweb type scratches came out beautifully. My expectations may be too high, but I can say that the defects I was trying to remove did come out.
