  • Very Disappointed by MF Buffing Pads

Recently bought the whole microfiber buffing kit, including the cutting and finishing pads, backing pad, and D-300 & D-301. Bought the package so that I could get the backing pad, which Meguiars says is necessary when using the MF pads. Anyway, the results from the D-300 & D-301 are fantastic. The problem is that both the maroon cutting pads, as well as the backing pad disintegrated half way through the first car. Fortunately, the pad didn't fling away from the buffer, allowing the backing pad to damage the paint. It certainly looks like a function of heat, but I'm not sure what to do differently. The pad was primed per Kevin Brown's excellent instructions, plus the pad was blown out with 110 psig of compressed air after each panel to unload it of contamination. The pad (and paint surface) was checked for temperature before and after each panel and seemed fine. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Thanks,
    Bobby

what Joe asked - did you stay outside Meg's recommended zone: 4,800 opm with D300 and 3,800 opm with D301 ?

I'm nearby in Missouri City. Did you use them on one of our 100+ temp days? How many cars did you do? One of our local tv stations did a story about fedx/ups leaving pkgs at the door in high heat ruining rx drugs. Could this have happened?

Using a UDM set at about 4.5. Used it yesterday when it was about 85 degrees. Polished a small car (Porsche 993) and one pad came completely apart and the other has about 50% separation. Looks like the adhesive between the black embossed layer and the pad is failing. This is really disappointing because they work so well. I just can't afford the cost of two pads per customer's car.

Absolutely, please call our Customer Care Center at the number Mark gave and they'll take care of you on this. It should not have happened as it sounds like you were doing everything right, including use of our W67DA backing plate. Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience, but know that we stand behind all of our products 100%.

Thanks Michael. I've been using Meguiar's products for over 30 years and have no doubt that they will take care of me on this. I love the performance of the pads and would really like to find out what I'm doing wrong so that I can continue using them. Wondering if maybe I primed the pads with too much product or if I was using a bit too much pressure. This had been discussed over at Autopia, but it was theorized that it was due to not using the W67DA backing pad. I'm guessing that there's an issue with the adhesive between the layers, but I don't know.

Not sure if I am correct making this statement but I think there was an issue with adhesive with some earlier produced pads.

                    Mark58,

I had heard that elsewhere as well, but don't know if it's a fact or speculation. Called the customer service line yesterday, and before I was through describing the issue, the agent was wanting my address so he could know where to send the replacement pads and backing pad. Like I mentioned earlier, I've been using Meguiar's products for over 30 years. In fact, I was given lessons on the right way to handle a buffer by the local Meguiars rep back in about 1982. This is the first time that I've ever had to contact customer service, but I had a feeling before I even picked up the phone that I would be treated right, and I was not disappointed. They don't earn lifelong customers like me just because of their name.

Great! they solved your problem. It took about 10 days when they replaced mine. Great team to work with.

FedEx delivered the new pads last night, only a couple days after I reported the problem. Why can't everyone's customer service be this good?

Did you say you used 110 psi of air pressure to clean the pads? I limit my compressor to 30 psi for pad cleaning to avoid damage. I also have taken to letting the air pressure spin the pad and not letting the DA do the spinning.
