  • What did I do wrong with #80

Have had good success with #83/#82/#81/2xNXT/NXT booster on my CC Red.

Everyone here has been raving about #80 so I decided to give it a try.

I buffed a 3 x 3 area with a 8006 on PC @ 5.0 for several passes, but not to the point of being dry.

Low humidity at night with temp around 62.

I removed with MF as soon as I was done buffing the section. Most came off easily, but when I went back over it to remove the last spots thin lines of hard caked material started showing up out of nowhere. Whichever way I moved the MF the lines would start to form in that direction. Even when I wiped an area that appeared to be clean, more lines would form. Switched to new MF--no improvement. I got out the QD to remove the stuff and it wouldn't get rid of it. I then re-buffed with more #80 and this helped a little, but the thin lines of stuff (they almost looked like scratches-OMG) were still forming when I tried to remove with MF. After the third buffing, I decided to quit as any more attempts might start to cause damage. I got out the #81 and went over the area with three different applications. I got it so oilly that it finally all came off and looked great.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Ok. No ideas yet?

I went to a car show today with the car in great shape. When I got there I decided to QD the hood. The lines that look like scratches started appearing again when I buffed with an MF. I'm at a loss---little help please.

While it's not a good idea to work seven days a week, it's also hard not to as the forum is 24x7 and open to the world, (i.e. all time zones).

I've been working behind the scenes with photos from a detailing clinic yesterday here at Meguiar's which started for me at 4:30am, and finished at 7:30pm. Then this morning, I started in answering questions and posting pictures from the G35Driver.com at Meguiar's! clinic, I didn't see your post until now, but I'd hate for you to think were not paying attention, but sometimes there's a break here and there... especially on Sunday's as it's family time and also a day to reflect and be thankful.

I've never seen anything like what you have described with a cleaner/polish. I've seen something like what you've described with #16 Professional Paste Wax, but not a cleaner/polish applied by machine.

It could be overuse of product, also, you might want to check you pad and make sure it's as clean as you can get it. The less aggressive cleaner/polishes in the Professional Line are non-abrasive as in they will not scratch or scour the surface if used correctly. They are also very rich in polishing oils.

What I would suggest is the next time you see this, remove what you can with a microfiber, or a 100% cotton terry cloth towel, and then apply a thin coat of wax and let it dry. Then remove the wax and see if that doesn't fix the problem.

I sometimes see people really focusing on removing every trace of polish from the finish before going to wax, but if you're going to apply two thin coats of wax, the first coat will help to remove any residual traces of polish when you remove it and the second application will insure even wax coverage for a uniform look and equal protection.

      Something to try at least...

      Sorry I didn't answer sooner...

      Mike

If you send me the original picture you used for your Avatar, or load the original into your gallery, I'll try to resize it in a way that it's not all pixelated looking. Red seems to be the worst color for viewing on monitors.

        Mike,

Didn't mean to bug you, but I was at my wits end.

This detail was on the hood and trunk. I did #80/#81/2xNXT/NXT booster. The large amount of #81 I put on after the #80 trouble seemed to clear up the problem and I didn't experience any problems with the wax or booster.

I went to a car show Sunday and when I started to QD the hood the scratches (they are not really scratches just some kind of disturbence of the product that looks like scratches) started to reappear.

Two weeks ago I had done a #83/#82/#81/2xNXT/NXT booster detail and had QDed the car every other day. I wanted to try the #80 to remove some very minor imperfections on the hood and truck. I did not remove any of those products prior to using the #80. Did I need to remove what I had on the car prior to using #80?

        Thanks,

        Wes

(put the pic for avitar in my gallery--what do you need to do to the pictures to get an unpixelated Red--I have Photoshop and iPhoto--I just don't know what is needed)

Thanks SprintKing that was a great improvement in the avitar.

Now if I only knew what to do with the hood and trunk problem.

Take everything off with DC#1? MPPC? (I don't know much about MPPC)

I also had this, but i found it to be only in the crevis of the bonnet/hood.

It seemed to be a form of hardened gum. Does it occur around the corners?

I just applied more #80 and stopped a little short. Buffed off with MF then done the process again. Only happend on the hood/bonnet which was weird.

                Revisited this issue again yesterday.

Went over the hood with Scratch-X and it removed normally. I then broke out the #83 with PC @ 5.0 8006 pad and buffed till nearly dry. When removing with MF most of it comes off and when it is nearly all off the MF starts pulling gummy lines of product that look like scratches--again!!!

Got depressed, closed the garage door and will wait a few days before I can even look at it again.

All I can think of is that I have built up too many layers of product on the paint, but from everthing I read here, most people think that you can't layer a lot because most of the products have cleaners in them--plus I'm using the PC which produces more cleaning power than by hand.

I have used a lot of polish, NXT wax, NXT booster, and daily QD on the car. Is it time to strip everything and start over?

Interesting... I've never heard of this before however.

                  We can't have this...

If you have applied both the ScratchX by hand, and then polished with the #83 by machine, I'll guarantee you that you have removed any layers of wax previously applied.

                  I'm stumped?

The only thing I can think of is overuse of product. If you you're still at the last step you mentioned above, which is you applied the #83 and then removed. I would try polishing with a fresh, new, clean W-8006 polishing pad and the #80 Speed Glaze and then applying two thin coats of the NXT Tech Wax. Don't overuse the #80 Speed Glaze either, use it sparingly on about the 4.5 setting.

I wish I could be there to see this first hand, if it happens again, perhaps you can capture the problem with a digital camera?

                    Hi Wes,

Heck, you're not bugging me, I just feel bad if someone posts a question and needs help right away and I'm away from the computer... that's all.
