  • black paint

guys, got a hot rod shop and do ground up builds however I have a few black personal cars and living in maine they need a good buffing twice a yr, is there any one step cleaner/polish that will do the trick with minimal swirl marks? or can i use a polish cleaner and is there any glaze or swirl remover that is quick and simple? not looking for a show car finish, if so i would re-clear, flat sand clear with 600,800,1000 so on and buff/polish
    thanks

    Re: black paint

    Working by hand, DA, rotary?

Working with a Dual Action polisher like a G100/110 would leave the best finish by machine, and the new #151 Paint Conditioning Cream seems like a pretty strong cleaner/wax that a lot of people like.

      First off... Welcome to MOL!

Second... Feel free to post some photos of your handy work.

Now on to the questions at hand. D151 is a new one step that just came out. I've used it a few times and it work great at removing light to moderate swirls and it polishes and protects in one step. Like you said you can get better results using three different products but since it's not a show car it works great. Another thing I've been noticing is it doesn't stain black trim so I can save time taping too.

Meguiar's borrows from our cutting edge Unigrit abrasive and polymer technology to create a One Liquid Solution, which truly removes defects, produces incredible high shine with long lasting paint protection.

Aggressive enough to remove severe defects, yet gentle enough to produce a durable swirl free finish. Change P.R.C's versatility by simply adjusting your method of application to achieve the desired results. This could include changing your buffing pads to changing your application method, for example for more defect removal power use a more aggressive cutting pad, for less defect removal use a foam polishing pad. For maximum defect removal use a rotary buffer, for only light cleaning ability apply using our G110 Dual Action Polisher or apply by hand.

This is a very versatile product that will deliver professional results over a wide spectrum of paint problems and application methods.

You can certainly check over at autodetailingsolutions.com for some G110 packages.

Also, if you are getting a lot of swirls in your cars from washing, you might want to look at how you wash the car....

                  Re: black paint

If you're not currently using a DA style polisher on your own rides the the rods coming out of your shop you really should investigate these very popular tool.

The remove the swirls after the compounding step on fresh paint jobs, something your street rod owners will really want out of their paint finish.

And for your own cars they're faster and more effective than working by hand or with a traditional Orbital Buffer like this...

                    Re: black paint

The dual action polisher is light weight and easy to control. Because the motor oscillates and rotates at the same time, it provides effective cleaning ability to remove defects like swirls and scratches out of paint without leaving swirls at the same time and without the risk of burning trough the paint.

If you push down too hard on the unit, the motor reacts by slowing down and even stopping both the rotating action and the oscillating action preventing you from swirling or burning through your car's finish.

Compared to working by hand... there's really is no comparison...

It's easy enough to use and master that anyone with a little practice can be producing professional results in no time...

                        You bet it's worth it.

After all the hard work your shop does you want the paint work to exceed your customer's expectations and that means a swirl free finish in bright sunlight or under the kind of lights you find at indoor car shows.

To insure you're not giving your customers back a paint job that the swirls are merely masked with a product like #7 Show Car Glaze or 3M Imperial Hand Glaze, you want one of your employees doing the final polishing with a DA Polisher, NOT a rotary buffer.

Giving your customer's a show car finish is the icing on the cake... and the DA Polisher is pretty much "Bubba-Proof", especially on black cars.... like this...

I'll let others chime in as to where to do your shopping but as far as pads go you really want to get into our new washable foam pads which will be re-launched at SEMA/NACE

Meguiar's New Foam Buffing Pads - Soft Buff 2.0

The new Soft Buff 2.0 pads incorporate several improvements which offer many new features & benefits.

Some new key features to all 3 three foam pads:
                          • New 7" size for a maximum footprint with a smooth buffing experience. These pads will only come in 7" size. That size works best for the Rotary Buffer & DA Polishers.
                          • Recessed backing for easy centering on a rotary buffer using the So1o backing plate. The W67DA will be recommended backing plate for use with DA Polishers.

                          • High tech laminate for pad durability. There are 2 pieces of laminate on the back of these pads with the Velcro sandwiched in between. This does not allow any product to seep onto or into the Velcro on the backing plate, (especially on a DA Polisher).

                          • Machine washable " WHOO HOO
We recommend using a quality laundry detergent on the warm water setting on the normal wash setting to wash and then dry on a low heat in the dryer or air dry in a clean area with no airborne dust or contaminants.

I would highly recommend the G110. They do a great job at polishing the paint. As Mike stated they are just about goof proof. I personally like the package deals @ Auto Detailing Solutions. Good deals, great service and Rick is a great person to deal with.
