  • What to use?

    Hi,
I'm new to Meguiars so sorry if this is in the wrong forum :-) I'm the owner of a 1993 Civic hatch. It was painted 2 years ago in Granada Black Pearl and it also got a clear coat. After the paint job I gave it some Sonax pure wax. Even though the paint was new and clean, it came out with a greasy look.
When polishing and waxing the car, it always end up in this "greasy" look. I have tried Sonax, Turtle and other products, but its still the same :-( It gets a bit better after the first car wash.
I have spend some hours in forum, watched the videos and so on, and I'm hoping Meguiars can do a difference. But which products to use?
There are also some swirls in the paint. I have put in a couple of pictures to show you. There was no sun, so I did my best with a lamp :-)
I'm thinking I'll get the mild clay bar and perhaps the M26. But I'm shot sure what to use in between and I cannot understand why it always end up in this greasy look
    I'm working by hand.

    Appreciate your help! Thanks!
    Thomas

I think you'll want to read and try to understand these threads first. We may need to change a few products based on what you have available, but knowing the process will help a lot.

      Re: What to use?

      Very interesting treads :-) Thanks.

      So, would this be allright?

Washing: Meguiar's® Gold Class™ Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner
Above surface cleaner: G1016 Smooth Surface Clay Kit
Below surface cleaner: Deep Crystal® System Paint cleaner
      Cleaner/polish: #82 or #09 ?
Polish: Will I need #7 or #81 now?
      Wax: #26

I'm not sure how aggressive the cleaner/polish need to be to remove my swirls?
And I'm not sure if I afterwards need to go over the car again with a pure polish or if I can go directly to the wax.

      And then for the tires:
      Gold Class™ Endurance®

      Thanks for your help! :-)

        Re: What to use?

If you are going to remove swirls from the whole car by hand, you'll surely end up with a sore arm

To remove swirls by hand I would recommend ScratchX. Your process could then look like this:
        Wash > Clay > ScratchX > Wax

You won't need the DC cleaner, as ScratchX does the cleaning for you while polishing. Also you won't need a pure polish, except if want to see how it looks.

Hope this simplifies it a bit. Btw nice to see a fellow countryman on here

          Re: What to use?

Heh..Yes indeed. Very nice to see I'm not the only one from Denmark!
I know it will be a long process with the ScratchX, but I simply doesn't dare to try a rotary - not yet. I want to know the products before "moving on".
My procedure will be this (just as described by you acturally):

Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo and Conditioner
          Smooth Surface Clay Kit
          Scratch X
          #7 Show Car Glaze
          #26 Hi-Tech Yellow Liquid Wax

However ZET, where do you buy your products? I think the price is insane in Denmark! I'll probably buy in the US and then get it shipped.

if you don't want to try a rotary get a Dual Action polisher. It is easy to use and also it is safe for your car.Have in mind that it will be much more easier by DA.I had the same problem with you and i was trying by hand for almost 2 years to remove the swirls without results. Now i have a DA polisher and my job is much more easier.DA is more fast and more effective than doing the car by hand. i recommended you to give a try.

For what you want to accomplish you can get a dual action polisher like the Meguiars G110 or the Porter Cable. These machines will not allow you to damage the paint like a rotary would and are safe but have their limitiations. They will still take you much further than doing it by hand. Something else to consider but hand is possible.

The steps you listed look good.

                Re: What to use?

All right. So I might have to reconsider :-) Because yeah, I worried about burning through the clear coat.
But is the #7 Show Car Glaze and #26 Hi-Tech Yellow Liquid Wax also possible to use by DA? Or will that need to be by hand?

All the products are for hand use can be used by DA too as the DA movement simulates the hand movement during polishing so it is not problem.Just avoid to use polishes that are made for rotary use because they will not brake down well and they probably damage instead of repairing it.

Curious about these statements. "Greasy" look.

With what did you apply and remove the products? What was your process?

                    Sounds like a technique problem.

                      That process looks fine

You could look into a DA as some have suggested, although we can't use the PC or G110 in Denmark due to voltage, you can get substitutes. I have a Bosch PEX 400 AE myself (besides a rotary).

I buy online in the US too. But since I have a detailing shop, some things I buy locally to save on shipping e.g. car wash shampoo.

Well, even though I have cleaned, polished and waxed other cars before, I'm new to detailing. So yes, I think its a technique problem as well. Its just, that all other cars I have been polishing etc., it ended up just fine!
I have only been using cotton towels - I don't know about the quality though. The process was wash, polish and wax. Both the polish and wax ended up "greasy" - its like it cannot fully get off the paint. I have tried to remove immediately and tried to let it sit for an hour or more.
I'm always using clean, new cotton towels.

Which shop in the US do you use? I don't know if I need to be worried about the containers and the flight. I have head stories about exploding containers due to the pressure.
Where are your shop located i Denmark?

I haven't had a problem with shipping (or exploding stuff) and you can't buy aerosols for the same reason i guess. Shipping is expensive though, but still cheaper than buying it locally. Usually I buy from autogeek.

My shop is in Lyngby north of Copenhagen it's called Eksklusiv Bilpleje, I've added a link on my profile, but basically you just add .dk

After polishing you could try to remove the residue with some QD this should remove the greasy/oily film, or you could give it a wash before waxing.
