quick question have a J plate sierra saphire and the bodywork is in really good shape for age only problem is the paint which is red is faded and when we tried polish to revive it after half an hour or so its back to faded red again. Any ideas on which product to use and fetch it back to its former glory.

Is there any chance of a picture? If the paint is fading that quickly, it sounds like it might be failing, and nothing will help it.

hi thanks for the quick reply, will try upload the pic i got when i get home from the garage as this old computer wont upload from the new camera. Unfortunately the car was sent up in the air on the ramp as they are packing away the cars for the night.

I should also ask of course which products were you using so far?

If the car has a clear coat and after cleaning it, the paint improves a little, but then returns to where it was previously, then it sounds like the clear coat has deteriorated past the point of no return and nothing is going to save it.

There's a sleight chance it can be revived by using an effective paint cleaner if the product you used previously wasn't effective enough to actually clean the dead paint off the surface, hard to say without knowing what you used and how you used it.

hi i believe we tried a product called t- cut red colourfast, the paintwork is unbroken and has a white bloom to it which stands out against the original red paintwork. If there is a mequires product i can buy at the NEC show in birmingham to bring this car back to its original red colour this would be great. I couldnt download the pics i took of the car as sons run off with the camera.

The product with the most oils to try and restore the paint would be #7 Show Car Glaze.

Are you working by hand, or machine? You would want to clean the paint some first, even just working in the Deep Crystal Cleaner, or Scratch would be good. Then apply the #7, and see what happens.

Just a note to those in the UK. While we here in the USA know "J plate" refers to your license registration date, we don't know when J plates were issued.

                    Re: colour fade

I justed Googled around and found out J registrations were issued circa 1991. That (Ford) Sierra (Mercury Merkur to us) should have a clearcoated finish.

by clearcoat are you referring to a lacquerd finish if so this is not the case with this car, generally the lacquer finish is given to a metallic paint.
