  • 1997 Peugeot 106 GTi - Newbie first detail

    Hello everyone.

Firstly I'd like to say thanks to everyone on here who has offered advice. Without it a newbie could easily use incorrect products/techniques and this will ultimately compromise the finish. I dont think I would have achieved anywhere near the finish I have without the support and wealth of information available on this forum so big

I eventually bought the G100 after much deliberation. It takes a little while to get used to it but after the bonnet I was feeling pretty confident when i came to do the front wings etc.

Due to the poor weather here in England during the last week I was unable to get many before shots

I did have a finish similar to this on many of the panels though (not quite as bad however):

I have one poor photo where you can see some scratches and swirls...doesnt really show the full extent however:

After washing thoroughly, (I actually used a sponge as I felt this would have more cleaning ability on an untreated surface) I then masked up and backed the car into the garage.

    Then came the claying:

    and more:

not sure what the browney/bronzey residue was....I actually live within 3 miles of a major clay producer - Imerys(formerly ECC) not sure if it is maybe some sort of fallout....

I then progressed onto the #83 DACP - it was necessary to do each section twice in order the reach the level of finish I was looking for. This was followed by an application of #80 all over, which gave this:

I then applied 2 thin coats of #21. What a great product: spreads easily, great shine and initially appears to offer great protection too!!

Finally I topped with a thin coat of #26 to enhance the gloss and bring out the depth in the paint.

    Results:

    Bonnet:

    Roof:

    Front:

    Bonnet reflection:

    Rear quarter:

    Side reflection:

    and another...

    and another:

    an ant's view:

excuse the wet wheels - I have to find a good way to dry them..dont want to use a shammy etc...

Hope u like the pics! The car btw has done 122,000 miles and is used daily. Im really chuffed with the way its come out.

Again, i cant stress enough, how much help this forum has been. All application techniques I used can be found here:

    Product/Pad/Speed

    and here:

How to remove swirls etc with G100

I simply adapted these to the products I had.

Also if anyone can advice on the best way to maintain the finish now I have it how I want it. How often should I be reapplying wax if washing weekly and using sheepskin mitt etc...?

    Thanks for looking

Maintaining is as easy as wash when needed, and use a quick detailer and a spray on wax in-between normal washing and waxing.

Here's a how to article on using a spray wax, either of Meguiar's spray waxes work really well...

Using the new Even Coat Microfiber Applicator to apply NXT Spray Wax

If you don't have a Grit Guard, get one!

cheers Mike, I got the insert but still searching for a 12" diameter bucket which is a bit tricky lol

How long does protection from the #21 last on average? Some seem to get 60 days of more and still going strong...I was thinking maybe reapply every 10-12 weeks? maybe 1 layer of #21 and another top of #26...?

Excellent results Atterspug. That colour looks fantastic. I use a face towel to dray the wheels, it absorbs the water really well. Its also worth considering claying the wheels it made a huge difference on my Celica.

          I've been after a G100 for a while. I've sent you a PM.

Great detail! Do you use an inverter to operate the G100 with the 220V current?

It depends on what conditions your car goes through. you need to wax whenever you want more of a shine or want to reprotect.

Excellent work. I love that color of red. It looks like the Magnetic Red color that the Corvette comes in.

thanks. I guess il just have to **** it and see really. Im assuming if I reapply a layer of the #21 I would need to layer a #26 again as the light cleaners in the #21 would remove the #26???

Thanks everyone for the kind comments

The light cleaners in M26 will likely remove some of the wax on the surface, but not all of the wax as you will have wax in the paint, not just on the paint.

oh...is there likely to be any dulling of the finish by layering #21 on top of a partially removed #26....I have been told carnaubas are slightly opaque?
