  • Paint correction on a 2007 sl550 black mercedes

This is a 2007 Black Mercedes that I did some time back at the first of the year for a Paint Correction and a 2 year paint coating applied as well as removing the rims and thoroughly cleaning and coating face & barrels. Already washed, dried, clayed, tapped, covered and ready for a 2-step of the Meguiars Twins.

Condition of the paint and what I'm working with.

    And a close up.

Machines, pads and products used for this Paint Correction Process.

    Before

    After

This is the left front fender, the scratches which can be felt by finger nail are very deep and all I'm going to do is approve upon so not as noticeable.

This is after 4 applications of M105 & 2 applications of the M205, being very careful not to apply to much pressure and speed more or less just going over very lightly. This isn't perfect but it is safe to say this is going to have to be good enough without removing to much clear.

Stopped to take this shot here because it show's a great before and after picture of just how severe the swirls and scratches are. I'm working from the back forward and as can be seen here I just got finished with the drivers door and lower fender area under the vents, still need to go over area around vents by hand & 3'' DA to remove more scratches.

These next 2 pic's are after the 1st step in polishing and as you can see, it is producing an amazing finish, Using a 3401 Flex DA, Meguiars M105 and Meguiars micro fiber cutting disk along with a step down with Cobra's polish foam pad going back over with the M105, This is a great combo of products and machine on this paint.

Removed from car, inspected and removing some severe bonded contaminants to get ready for washing.

After I washed and thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned.

Even after the thorough scrubbing and cleaning with Meguiars D143 non acid wheel cleaner this is what I removed from the barrel of the rim using my old used up C2000 mild clay that I save instead of throwing away when to dirty to use back on paint.

Polishing with a pre coating prep to go one step further to insure that the coating will have a good cleaned surface to bond to and protect the way it was designed too.

Finished and 2 coats of coating were applied, it even gave the barrel of the rim some crazy gloss!

Wheel well's were also thoroughly scrubbed, cleaned and dressed.

Outside of rim was treated to the same procedure.

Finished with all polishing, chemically stripping and paint coating.

    Thanks for looking!

          Great work, as always, Daniel!

Would you classify this paint as hard, soft or somewhere inbetween? Just asking as I've worked on a 2007 SL65 AMG (the same body and paint color as this, just with the full blown AMG package) that had very soft and haze prone paint. That you hit this a couple of times with M105 would seem to indicate this car had fairly hard paint. If so, then this is just another indicator that the paint on every example of a certain is NOT the same. Always something to consider the first time anyone works on a given vehicle.

            Thank Buddy, appreciate that.

I put this somewhere more towards a harder clear, But as you can see by my DA's layed out that each one has more power or less power then the next one and have different Pads on each one. I guess that's my technique if you will? I follow Barry's rule "always use the least aggressive product to do the job right" but I also add alittle more to mine.

When I'm testing I play around with not only the least aggressive product but also pads and machines. On vehicles that have deep scratches rather soft clear or hard I have up to 4900 Lumens of light on that area/spot but on this paint I only used 2100 Lumens, and start with the least aggressive product, pad and my 7424XP and do a couple section passes stop wipe and access the progress being better or not.

I'd rather take my time and go over something several applications and chip away if you will at the scratches very slowly with progress little my little if all I'm trying to do on a deep scratch is Improve upon(customer doesn't want to pay for my touch-up work) so it's not as noticeable while still leaving as much clear for UV protection. So usually when out of my garage you really don't see as much.

Also while still using M105 with the HF DA and the LC CCS light cutting pad ( feel that this was my goto for this correction> little more power DA/less aggressive pad/ more aggressive compound)on the sever scratches I more or less just let the weight of the machine do the work and only made(best I can remember 3 or 4 section passes before stopping and check/ reason for making 4 applications with 3 to 4 section passes at a time) Right or wrong over the years I've adapted this style/technique with paints and been working for me.

              Great work. Again! Lol

Its also great how you take the time to write not only what you do in your process but the reasons why. A thinking detailer is a great detailer!

Appreciate that Buddy, I try to help explain the best I can so no confusion on what I did or used and why. That why maybe some else can learn from me or add their style to something that I showed or did. Or suggest something for me to add to my style, or do to get better results! Were all here to learn from each other and I've learn many great things from the guys here over the years.

Thanks cfilly! I first removed the small chunks of tar, road film, brake pad contaminants that was hard and bonded to the barrel then scrubbed and cleaned with Meguiars D143 non acid wheel cleaner and then used my old used up C2000 mild clay to clay the barrel to help remove any more contaminants that may be left on there.

Then since I was going to coat I used Detailers Pro pre coating prep and used my 3'' DA with a polishing pad to work in really well just to make sure the surface was the cleanest smoothest possible for the coating to get the best bonding to and last as long as possible.

Thanks guys always love the comments and questions!

Hi, great work and a very interesting documentation - really instructional! Thanks!
I'm just an amateur - on my SL (2013) the black paint is very sensitive (wish Mercedes would not use the water based paint any more) - I had to adjust to it while claying it - now I learned to use a lot of quick detailer while claying - if not - scratches are the result.
