  • Graffiti, Coal, Swirls - Custom Detail

Presented with an ES300 which had been graffiti'd, swirl'd and scratched all over by possums. The car is also next to a coal mine daily, and travels around 250km to get there and back ever day on the freeway. So needless to say it was a mess.

We were given 24 hours to fix this up. The client wanted us to pick up 3pm Friday afternoon and hand back by 3pm Saturday afternoon. I discussed this crazy time frame with him and he said "just get it done".

    So, here's our process:

    1. Abrasive wash
    2. Medium grit clay bar with Mother's Showtime and Meguiars Gold Class car wash as lube.
    3. Secondary wash with Meguiar's Gold Class
    4. Complete dry, moved to dry area for further inspection and corrective prep.

Here's a couple of pics. You can see the clay holding the coal deposits, and I can't say anything that's not four-letters about the other pics.

    5. 1800 grit wetsand on tricky/marred areas and nasty scratches.
    6. Enter Rotary + M105 + wool pad. Took around 4-6 passes per panel to work the paint correctly, being ultra careful of the heating of the paint comparative to the cut action of the rotary and how much we could actually get down.
    7. Rotary + SwirlX + soft foam pad. This step was to ensure complete removal buffer trails and holograms.
    8. Washed down.
    9. Waxed with Meguiar's DCW, set for 45 minutes to dry properly on 'swipe test'.

And here are just a couple of pics of our results. Hope you like them! In total, I got 2 hours sleep (2am to 4am), and we managed to get this client's car back at 2:45pm Saturday looking like this.

Got one more - was in such a rush to get the car back to the client we didn't have time for a proper shoot.

        Here she is:

            Nice work mate!

Was that last shot taken in Homebush?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Pure shock, actually! Absolutely stoked. One of those details where as the detailer you stand back and think "Yep. This is a good job" with a huge amount of pride. Doesn't matter what type of car it is, whether it be a Prius or a 458 Italia, they are the most rewarding.

              Thanks Davey!

Indeed it is, yes. I was based out of home which is very close by, but now over in Auburn for our workshop.

                Great save!

This is one of the times the customer will ask, "Ya sure that is my car?"

Nice job! Those headlights look pretty dull too, maybe you can get a resto job after the great paint work you did.

The headlights were both interior and exterior. I told the client I would be able to touch them up, however I was advised that he had ordered new headlights.

That car was seriously messed up before you got a hold of it. Interesting choice of SwirlX on the rotary for hologram removal - can't say we've seen that one before!

Re: Graffiti, Coal, Swirls - Custom Detail

                          First, the car looks great.

Now, a few suggestions which helps all of us out in the detailing world...when you have more time on future jobs.

Post side by side comparisons as often as you can. Use tape and show us each panel before and after compound.

This helps all of us learn about the process you used...to determine how we might attack a future job.

Also, vary your angles and distances when taking pictures. Its important to take sun shots of the same panel from different angles to show that holograms don't exist. I'm in awe of anyone who can get excellent hologram free results using a rotary...as I've always detected hints of holograms when I've tried correction using a rotary.

                            Hi chethewitt,

                            Thanks very much

Usually that's what I do for each vehicle. Nice 50/50s, before and afters (sunlight). Unfortunately for this vehicle, I just didn't have the time (plus it was overnight so I couldn't get sunlight pics at each stage).
