  • Ramblings of a newbie…

Hi all I am a long time car nut, but new to detailing. My goal is to take my skills to the next level and become an amateur detailer.

I was able to attend Mike’s detailing 101 class on Saturday Jan. 30 and I learned a lot. Mike is a wealth of knowledge, but I also learned a lot from some of those attending the class.

    I have 5 vehicles that I want to kick up a notch.. a 66 Chevelle Malibu, a 98 Chevy PU, a 04 Chevy Tahoe, a 09 BMW and a 10 Titan.

After the class I placed my order with ADS for all the product I need to start and the G110 v2 DA.

I could start with my wife’s Beamer, but if I screw that up I will be sleeping in the garage… So I am starting on my 98 Chevy. A good vehicle to learn on and it certainly needs the attention. I bought it new in 98, it has 148,000 miles and has lived outside in the dessert sun all its life.

I took a few pictures after I washed it. I applied only one thing I learned from class. Four glugs of Gold Class Car Wash shampoo in a bucket of water is too much. I used 1 oz per gallon and I had lots of suds.

I did use my two bucket method, one bucket for the wheels and the other for the body. Mike I promise once I have clay bared the truck; it will be your 2 bucket method from then on.

So here are the pictures after a wash.

    And after Ultimate Protectant

In case you are wondering.. it was 72 degrees here and slightly overcast. A great day to work on the car and I did not need to worry about the water freezing before I dried the truck.

I was happy with the results I got in an hours work.

This weekend I will start with clay bar and Ultimate compound. Just a small area, to see how it turns out.

You'll be even happier with a few more hours....

Good thing you got the G110, no doing all that by hand.

Welcome to MOL and good luck with your new "toys" for your new hobby. I too just got the new G110v2 and looking forward to "transforming" some rides!
There's no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you'll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

              Re: Ramblings of a newbie…

I finish the outside. I am happy with the results, but there are a number of paint chips that can not be fixed without a new paint job. I know I will need a new truck soon, but this old girl has been a great truck and deserves to finish life looking like she did when I first picked her up in 1998.

Now for the ugly part. I am sure this is everyone's favorite part, cleaning the engine bay.

I used tar and bug remover on the valve covers and All Purpose cleaner on the rest. Then Ultimate Protectant on the rubber after it was clean..

And yes I see the spots I missed on the air intake, I have my cloth at the ready, and will clean that up as soon as the sun is up.

Just the interior left to do... and I will have done my first vehicle.
