  • Grey Evo 8 turns out to be Black with Metallic Flakes after AutoLavish magic

    2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution XIII

This 2003 Lancer Evo started off with the normal signs that come with years of improper washing techniques: swirls swirls and more swirls. So many swirls that the metallic flake in the paint was nearly completely unnoticeable. The black paint looked fabed and grey from light being reflected in a million different directions from the shallow scratches (as shallow scratches are what swirl marks actually are). The vehicle also suffered from some Random Isolated Deep Scratches(RIDS), some which were not 100% removed from machine polishing. Other than the abused looking paint, the vehicle was actually in very good shape, with very few deep blemishes / dents, and few signs of hardwater/bird bomb etching.

    The Evo upon arrival

Looking quite faded, and we haven’t even got the loose dirt/dust off yet

Chemical Guy’s Sticky Wheel Cleaner applied to the rims and calipers, P21S TAW used on the tires, lower panels, and inside the gas door, to loosen grime.

Foamed down the vehicle with Citrus Wash and Clear to loosen any other grime, allowed to dwell, then washed with CG Maxi Suds II using the two bucket method.

Clayed with Meguiar’s aggressive clay using DP Four-in-One and ONR as clay lube. This took quite awhile as the car is a daily driver that has been outside without protection for quite some time.

Re-rinsed to get clay lube residue off, then taped carefully to insure protection of areas/items that weren’t to be polished.

    Test panel time!

From our test panel, we saw how well Meguiar’s M205 + a Meguiar's Yellow Solo 2 pad removed defects, and that it finished down haze-free, but it didn’t finish down hologram-free. Not good enough.

The 2-step correction combo we ended up with was Meg’s M205 on a Meguiar's Yellow Solo 2 pad followed by 3M Ultrafina on the Ultrafina pad. This resulted in amazing clarity and depth, got rid of 95%+ of defects on the soft Mitsu paint, and brought the car back to life. The same combo was used on the taillights as well with great results.

In this pic we see the clarity achieved already. The near side is done, while Marc works on the far side of the hood.

The door handle pockets had seen better days:

Here the pocket was hit with M105, M205, and Ultrafina, all by hand. The handle portion was also done (after this pic) to completely clear up the handle.

The headlights weren’t completely translucent, but were getting close. The front end of the vehicle takes the majority of rock chips and acidic bugs, and the headlights were no different. They received new life due to M105 followed by M205 on 3 inch pads. Look at the "afters" for how the headlights turned out!

Here Jacob is almost done going around the vehicle with the Ultrafina combo (and you can see the headlights cleared up):

...and here he is hitting the door frames with the PC, black pad, and M205. Using the PC was imperative to keep the rubber seals intact. The increased energy from a rotary will modify the rubber's properties and leave noticeable marking (aka messing it up). The same process was used for each individual vortex generator fins

As you can see, the backing plate comes very close to touching. Do not try this at home! It takes a very steady hand and skill to pull this off without leaving marks

Time wasn’t on our side as we got a late start on this project. Once final polishing was complete, we rewashed the car to remove oils, tape residue, and polishing dust, dried the vehicle with waffle weave microfibers + a leaf blower, then applied Danase Wet Glaze using the PC7424 + a blue Lake Country pad. The result was a super slick, well-protected finish, with stunning clarity and gloss.

After we packed everything up and were set to go, we applied our final layer or protection to the finish: Chemical Guy’s JetSeal109. This insured even and full coverage, while adding to the wet-look of the paint. Then preceded to dress the fender wells and tires. These final 2 "after" pictures were taken at 10:30 pm. We owe you guys daylight pics, and we hope to get them soon!

Looks AMAZING, Great turn around for sure! Ive never been a fan of evos or any kind of foreign car but I love this one. Im curious, is the paint as soft as Hondas?

Either way, that is TRUE detailing right there, not one area missed or anything and great attention to the finer details Great job!

You always provide great, thorough write-ups and do excellent work.

Just a few tips, if you get minor holograms with the M205 and the yellow pad you may want to try a slightly shorter work time. When I was first testing the product I was working it for a full minute or longer with very little product. I realized that I was over working it (it didn't gum up or crumble so I didn't realize I had worked it too long) and it caused very minor marring or holograms. I re-hit the same spot with the same Meguiar's yellow polishing pad and M205 and worked it about half the time and it finished flawless.

Not saying that was your issue, but just a tip in case it was

Also, it looks like you could benefit from a larger backing plate for a a more even foot print with your larger pads. The SOLO backing plate would seem to be a great candidate.

Then again, you might like it that way, but I thought I would suggest it just in case

Thanks again for sharing your top-notch work!

Thanks guys! I'm glad you like the long posts. We try to make them "educational", with some insight to the decision-making. Posts like these are what helped us out, and IMO they are much more entertaining. I have quite a few more vehicles to post up, but each post takes a lot of time to put together, and I do not want to post a new thread every day (and have people get tired of us!).

I still cant help but to keep looking at this thread! I love the results! :0

You make it look so clean and easy! While I was detailing my car today it was super messy, splatter everywhere, dried up polish residue and dust etc. You make it look so easy!

              Awesome!

Mark, thank you!!! Your tips are greatly appreciated! We actually tried a lot of what you said during our pinning down of the combinations and methods best suited for this vehicle. And what you see is a result of two things: This Mitsubishi paint being incredibly soft, like softer than Honda S2000 paint, and our measurements being in the 90's (micrometers). So where I would have used something like Ultimate to cut down the defects quickly and rather softly, I did not want to risk overdoing it. Since we were two polishing at the time, we decided to take it slow and work with just the M205. A little longer got us the correction needed without going too far. We also felt the black would need a refining step regardless of the cutting finish, so a second step would be required anyways. It was going to be either M205, Ultrafina, or maybe Machine Glaze or #7. Using M205 for the refining also using lighter pads would have worked (like on the black 997 we did a few weeks back), but we had not used the ultrafina lately and I wanted to see how it would clear up on a soft black. I always felt the pad is rather hard for a ultra finishing polish, so this would be the test of fire. I was pleased, and it did take a bit longer than expected, but it finished up so nice it was worth the wait.

We had 2 rotaries running, my Flex with a Lake Country 6" backing plate, and Marc's Makita with the smaller backing plate. The Makita is such a smooth machine, and with the delayed trigger we felt it would be better for finishing. So I started with the M205 combo on the flex. Well, the Makita was having trouble with the Ultrafina pad (just too large), my W66 backing plate was damaged (another story), so all there was was this small plate. So we swapped pad combos. Well, Marc found it easier to do the contours with the Solo 2 pad flexing just right, assuring not to take out any edges. Also, I found the Makita was having trouble clearing out the M205 holograms. The flex with a larger backing plate and a more "positive" response was better in finishing down. The bite from the M205 was adequate with the Makita combo.

So this whole detail was kinda weird! Things we though would be home-runs turned out not to be, but the workarounds ended up working great! I feel we also preserved as much of the paint as possible.

So yeah, I need more backing plates! I miss my W66 so much! There is a local place that might have it, and I've been so busy I have not been able to make it downtown (or forgetful) to check them out. The W series of plates is, IMO, superior to the LCC I'm using now.

Nice work. What's interesting is that Jacob details clients' cars in the kind of clothing I play golf in!!! That's professionalism in my book.

Great work as usual. My first reaction was, Yikes!. When I saw all the swirling on that paint. But, as usual your capable hands turned it around. Fantastic results. Great work as usual. Way to go.

                        That was nasty.

Great job bringing it back to life!

It does take a very steady hand with a DA to use a small pad like that without bumping the BP on the paint at all, props man!

Here are some pics the owner snapped for us now that the rain has ceased in Michigan. The car has been rained on, and sleeps outside (no garage), and is dusty. But the shine is still there!

Interesting how this Evo had soft paint. I recall a black Evo done by I think Presidential Detail that had rock hard paint in which he had to use m105 on a wool pad with TWO passes.

So I wonder if Mitsubishi is using different paint for Evo 9's compared to the older Evo 8's. Or perhaps it's just a car to car basis.

Either way, great work man! The befores actually hurt my eyes lol. I hope the owner takes care of it much better this time. Nothing is more painful than a full correction, just for the owner to mess it all up again.

Detailers clean places nobody see. Detailer see's things nobody else see. But if you ask a Detailer to see how a dress looks on a woman, they are blind.
