Round 1 – Quick and dirty, well, quick and clean really.
- finish – single stage white, parked outdoors, existing base of #6
The day I got the bottle I went out to the truck and did half the hood with 129D and half with Quik Detailer. Can't help but notice that 129D has a strong dose of that unmistakable NXT smell.
The finish had a light road film on it that both products removed easily. Both wiped off easily. Slickness seemed about the same on the already waxed surface.
I was expecting to try the product, wait a couple days then do a wash and see how that went. Mother Nature had other plans. A few hours after application we got a heavy rain. By the next morning there rain had eased up. There was no obvious difference in beading between the two sides during my drive to work.
Round 2 – I do something dumb
- finish – single stage black, garaged, existing base of #21
Rolled in from Cars&Coffee to stash the sports car and load up the truck for the rest of the day's activities.
Now, every Meguiar's label always says to apply in the shade to a cool surface. Even the simplest, lightest products like Quik Detailer and #34 say that.
So, here I am with a hot, black car, in full sun and I figure hey, it's still morning and not too warm yet, I can get away with a little mist&wipe before putting it away.
Nope. Got a little streaking. Mind you, this was on a single stage black hood (or bonnet, it's a British car) in full sunlight with the engine running after a good drive. The surface was hot. It's not the product's fault if I do something stupid. Anyway, it wasn't severe, but it was noticeable.
Note to self: Don't be stupid. Follow directions. Use a little common sense. OK, that's not going to happen. So I'll at least be more careful when breaking the rules.
Round 3 – back up and try again
- finish – single stage white, parked outdoors
This time I started by washing and then cleaning the hood back down to bare paint; MPPC, G100, W8006 pad.
Again, wiped half the hood with Quik Detailer and half with 129D.
This time I could feel that the 129D was slicker to wipe off and left the finish slicker afterwards.
Both sides looked clean and glossy. This time I should be able to drive around for a couple days before messing with it.
Round 4 – and now for something completely different
- finish – base/clear light colored metallic, garaged, just washed
So the MINI hadn't been clayed in a while and I figured that since the instructions were to use 129D as a mist&wipe...
Now I can really feel it. This stuff feels really slick when claying. It wipes up easily and leaves the finish looking great. And if you didn't notice how strong the NXT smell was before, wait till your hands are covered with it.
It's hard to explain but the finish feels silky. I like this stuff.
On my test panel, the water beading action on the unwaxed section with 129D has diminshed dramatically. It still beads water better then the uncompletely protected section, but the gap has narrowed by a large margin.
Intrestingly, the area with just NXT paste is still beading water very well, better then the side 129D over NXT. In terms of beading action, the NXT only section is beading the best and is the slickest, the 129D only and the 129D over NXT paste are equal in terms of slickness and beading action, and obviously the unprotected section is the the worst.
On my grandmother's hood, the water beading action has also diminshed by a large margin, and is only slightly better then the area with no product on it. Three days is a long time for a "mist and wipe" product to hold up, but it seem most of the benefits from first 48 hours has now diminished.
Well it time for my update on 129d. Today was my day 4 with the product. It was time for a car wash. Were I live we have a car care center. I went there at 9:00 this morning; Here is my findings.
Washed car, 2 bucket method/grit guards/gold class shampoo
Is there Anything Different? Yes there is. Water beads tremendously. Also appears that the water is sheeting off the car quickly. The soap is not staying put. It sheeting off the car also. Have to rewash the section im
mediately to have any effect.
Is there a different feel during the wash? Yes the car feels cleaner faster. Smoother less grit. (This wasconfirmed by my grit guards when I was all done. When I emptied my buckets, there was alot less particles under the guard.) The washing seemed to go alot faster.
Any different feel afterwards? The car does not appear to be as smooth or as silky as It was before I washed it. The reason I mentioned my car care center at the beginning of this post is as follows: The right side 1/4 panel was sticking out in the sunlight. When I dried the car using the absorber and water magnet. This area that dried in the sun looked very smeary and halogramed. I rewashed this area after moving car. It did nothing to change the appearance. Came back to my garage and tried using this product to smooth things out. No luck! Applied last touch and finish is good to go. Other than this one spot. Every other aspect of the product was great. Sorry for the long post. Just trying to answer all of Mikes questions completely.
After a few days, still slick the beading has lessened a bit.
Since DR had said no PC this weekend (shoulder) I can put this stuff on the whole car! WOWO
If this stuff ends up being a product like #21 can it be used as a LSP after waxing or be used as something like the Speed Detailer/Quick Detailer? I have never used #21 so I have no experience with the product.
You left out licking the water off. Oh, wait a minute, that's my cat, not my car. Uh, I mean my cat licks himself dry. I don't lick my cat dry. Or my car. -PC.
