  • G'day from Down Under

    Hi everyone,

As a very long-time lurker here, I thought it was well past overdue to register and pop my head out to say g'day.

I've been a self-and-friends detailer for around 3-4 years now, and have only recently expanded into proper business operations (last 5 months). Slowly built up a portfolio over time and now business is going quite the way I want it to that I've now got a proper premises. Happy days! Time to move out of the residential wash bay & garage, at last. It became a farce when some of my neighbours thought I had a new car each day or two.

Early on I found great strides with Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and have now divested into matching appropriate product to appropriate paints i'm presented with. Best thing I ever learnt myself was that no two paints are the same, so hardly ever am I using the same process with the same products twice.

So, here's a question for you all - your dream setup. I have a 30 car garage with semi-OK fluorescent lighting. There is a wet area to use, and plenty of dry/clean as well. What would you do first to the area if you could do anything? For me, as I have plenty of sunlight (Australia!), i've rigged part of the dry area with 8 x 1000W Halogens for checking as I go. Then, after each corrective or machine polish step, I find myself outside checking for holograms or buffer swirls (I'm a massive rotary fan).

So what would you do first? Mine was the halogen rigs and organising product shelving.

Welcome to MOL - good to have you with us!!

Proper organization and great lighting - if you've got those two down, your shop is well on the way being everything you need (it sounds like space is a non issue!!). Brilliant observation about paint differences, too, since so many people lose sight of that or are totally shocked when a process they used on one car is less than perfect, or even an outright failure, on another.

By the way, do you happen to have any pictures of this new shop? We're sure plenty of people would be jealous to.....er, interested to see it!

Space is definitely a non-issue, and some wonderful cars keep us company (R33 GT-R, E30 M3, plus a few more). It's wonderful sharing a detailing shop with an existing performance tuning shop

Will definitely take some pics and upload them - just been way too busy when I get in to even consider taking pics yet!
