  • Problem with APC...

    Need some advice please!

Had my guy go out and clean a car. 2005 Dodge Neon.
He used APC on the seats and carpets, then extracted with the Mytee carpet extractor with only water in it. This is the result. Any ideas what caused this?

    hey Nick,

I am by no means a 100% professional but I have to ask this. Are you sure that it was only apc and not something else used. I ownly ask this because it almost looks bleached. I have used both apc and apc plus and have never had this happen. I think you may want to really question your worker to make a determination on what chemical was actually used. He may have sprayed something harsher on it them relized he messed up and tried to extract it but the damage was already done.

      Hey Nick,

I have never seen that happen. Is the color completely gone from the material?? I too wonder if he used another chemical by accident as I have not seen or even heard of that happening before...

I will forward this to Tom at Meguiar's so he can chime in...

Sorry I wish I could have been more help...

I don't carry any bleach in the van. Nothing that would cause anything like this. About the strongest thing we carry in the van is Super Degreaser, and it wouldn't cause this kind of damage.

I guess I'm mainly looking to see it APC reacts like this to a different chemical. Like maybe something was already in the seats, then when the APC was sprayed on it, it had a reaction resulting in a bleached look. I don't know. Guess I have to buy a set of seats

He used APC all over that vehicle. Front seats, carpets, rear seats, etc....
This is the only area where it had this reaction. And it didn't show up immediately. It took a couple of hours to show this damage.

Thanks Tim. I've never seen anything like this before either. I'm wondering if something wasn't in the seats already, and the APC just cause this reaction when it was mixed by spraying it on the seats.

We have been using APC for a while at my shop and never had any problem at all with any discoloration.I would think something else was used on the seats. It almost looks as if it was in your extracter.sorry to hear this.

My dad has about the same year Dodge truck with the same looking fabric seats. He gets spotting from any water on his seat that looks about like what shows up on the front passenger seat top right in your photos. I've put some plain tap water on his seat to see if it was really just water that stained them and it did. I've been afraid to try anything to clean them if just water does that to them. Maybe it's something with that fabric from Dodge? Just a thought.

                      Mike,

I make sure they do a test spot before they do anything. As I said earlier, this reaction took a couple of hours to appear. Plus, it only reacted this way in this one area, no where else.

Do you happen to use wheel brightener? I know it is hard to confuse the two, but is there any chance at all that this could have gotten any where near the APC? What happened to those seats is just ludicrous as I have never seen that happen before. Out of curiosity, how harsh is APC when used straight with no dilution?

                            Re: Problem with APC...

My guess would be that something else spilled or was used on the seat prior, notice the running look of the stain. Looks like it soaked in and worked its way down. Then when you hit it with APC there was some type of reaction that caused this. The other thing in mind would be if the area was previously worked on using a stain. The Interior specialist i talked to earlier said that he uses a type of stain to take out different stains from carpets and seats and he has different colors to match the makes and models or cars interiors. He usually works at dealerships because this is not always a permanent fix but the dealer likes the cars to look like new. I have never done this or had this problem but maybe you ran into it and pulled it out of the seat with the APC. I know its unlikely but just trying to think outside the box. Other than that ive got nothing

I do not carry Wheel Brightener.
