  • Removing contaminants in the CC

Okay, so I got my car painted (roof, mirror covers, rear bumper) about a a week ago (9 days), and the guy did a pretty bad job. My main issue though is some pretty heavy contaminants in the clear coat. It's laden with bits of sand that I'm desperate to remove by Saturday (the 23rd of April) for a car show. It doesn't have to be perfect, but since I went through the trouble of having it painted, I'd like to try to fix it a bit.

I have the Porter Cable DA, which I could do some damp sanding with, but would I be okay to do that and be able to remove the sanding scratches out? I don't even want to remove all the orange peel, just get some/most of the contaminants out so it looks mostly like the rest of the car (which is 14 years old, 1997 Jaguar Xj6L).

Some really light damp sanding with 3000 grit? Followed by Ultimate Compound, then SwirlX (or should I get a 205/105 combo?), then 7 Show Car Glaze (no wax because apparently you're supposed to wait a month or so with fresh paint). That's what I'd like to get done for the car show. Do you guys think it at all possible some/any of the contaminants would come out if I clayed the surface?

I'm really worried about wet-sanding the car. I'd take it somewhere and have it done, but the shop that I trust (not the place that ruined the paint) can't wet-sand the contaminants out until a week after my car show.

    The sand is in it?

If the sand is actually in the paint then you may have a serious problem. If it is on top of the clear coat or bonded to the finish then give claying a shot.

I'm really hoping the sand isn't in the CC. I'll see if claying doesn't seem to fix or at least greatly relieve the problem. I probably should have checked before I questioned. (oops).

Try a clay bar first as mentioned. If that does not work, I would take it right back to the painter and tell him to fix it. I have dealt with a bad body shop before, they will fix the issue.

Clay bar didn't work, I can't take it back to the shop, the work the guy did was just so bad, I wouldn't trust him to touch my car again. Trust me, I'm done with him. I think I'm going to wait and have it professionally wet sanded by another body shop I trust.

Yes, that is another option. Have it professionally corrected and contact him and tell him that he will be covering the bill. Make sure to contact him BEFORE any work is performed.

Good deal- I didn't get to respond before, but I was going to say that I think your Jag is special to you- if it were me, I'd wait and have a good shop do it, even if it means missing a car show- no sense in rushing through a process just to make a show... Great choice. (IMHO anyway)

I'm still going to the car show, but I just really hope the rest of the car is so shiny and perfect that it's perfection distracts from the flaws.

While I believe I could wet-sand the car perfectly fine myself, I'd rather have a shop do it just so I don't have to worry.
