  • how come nobody uses the burgundy cutting pads?

I've tried and use other cutting pads regularly, but I've never used another pad from meguiars to cut aside from the yellow pads. But I was wondering why nobody ever talks about the burgundy cutting pads from meguiars. Are they terrible? Not finish well? What's the issues?

Couple reasons: burgundy foam cutting pads create intense heat build-up (especially on high speed settings) and haze on delicate paints. In most cases using them with aggressive liquids requires extra polishing step as a follow up. Once microfiber cutting pads (and DA Microfiber Correction System) were introduced most D/A users switched to them.

Greg's answer is, of course, correct.

We developed our burgundy cutting pad for rotary use, to be a fast cutting pad for severe defect removal (think sanding marks). While it can be used on the DA, we caution against using it with that tool due to the aggressive nature of the pad and how it can easily haze softer paints. That doesn't mean you should never use it on a DA, but with the introduction of the DA Microfiber System it's even less common to see that pad with a DA. Where we do see it used a lot is in the Marine and RV world, where the harder nature of gel coats almost necessitates use of more aggressive materials.

If you're talking about the Mirror Glaze 2.0 Soft Buff burgundy cutting pad, I use it and I've had a lot of great success with UC. I use the Yellow polishing pad with UP, and then the beige finishing pad with Gold Class. With the Porter Cable and the burgundy, I tend to use 3 or 4 as a medium speed, only occasionally going faster. In fact, there are times when this combo is not aggressive enough, and I just have to use the highest speed, more pressure, or more passes.

Sometimes it pays to think outside the box. I love switching up on pads and compounds. Sort of like changing gear ratios at the track. Meguiars makes great compounds and pads but tweaking them for something other then what they were designed for is in a car guys nature. I have used the maroon pad with m205 and was quite surprised with correction and finish on certain surfaces.

Thanks everyone for your responses very useful information and thanks Mike stoops I never knew what they were intended for or designed to use on with which tools. I also have the mf correction system and I often use the mf cutting pads with m101 with great success and finishing. Just some dusting but that's another topic
