  • ScratchX and a DA work great together!

I am now a HUGE fan of Scratch-X! I've got a black Corvette, and my usual method of removing swirls and light scratches with my DA has been to use either #83 or #80 first (depending on the severity of the area) then following it with #9 to get rid of any micromarring, then finishing it off with my LSP (I'm now using NXT 2.0, but last year I was using #21)

But on the advice of another black Corvette owner, he told me to try out Scratch-X with my DA instead and it does a fantastic job! The Corvette's clear coat is pretty hard, so usually one pass with any product doesn't do much, but when I make one pass over the car with Scratch-X (on my UDM set to speed 5, with a white LC polishing pad) it makes a major improvement in my finish! And not only that, but it leaves the finish shiny with no micromarring, so I don't need to do anything except go straight to my LSP! I also love how easy Scratch-X buffs off, it saves me a lot of time! I can now get better results in 90 minutes (including putting on the LSP!) than I used to get in three hours!

So if you guys haven't tried using Scratch-X over your entire finish with a DA yet, I urge you to give it a try, this stuff works like a charm!

Wow, good to hear. I have to give that a try. I thought Scratch X was less aggressive than both #80 and #83 and it still cut better than them both on the Vette? What gives?

That's what amazes me the most!

My only beef is that I wish ScratchX was sold in larger bottles. It doesn't take long to use up one of those small tubes, but yet it costs the same as a 16oz bottle of #9.

I've had the same results with scratch X and PC, does a good job and does not leave any of that milky haze that 80 and 83 can be prone to leaving! I'd estimate the cut power to be about 70% as strong as 80, but that's just so awesome that it is not prone to leaving that haze!

I too wish it was sold in larger bottles

I thought scratchX was a hair stronger than 83?

It is in the same area as M09, with a PC at least.

Yeah, even hand applied I wish it was sold in a bigger size. That tube is no bigger than toothpaste!

It's great stuff and a little goes a long ways, I hand applied my Yukon AND Neon twice with one tube.

Never tried it with the PC though, may give it a shot.

Good information, great to have members post their own experience with different cars, helps a lot!

I have a DA and both scratch x and M80. I was going to buff out the swirls off the entire car wiht M80 but now you have me thinking of going the scratch x route..

                    Any before and after pics?

gtstwincam, I advise you to first try a section with the #80 first, it will knock out more swirls then the scratch X, if the #80 finishes off LSP ready then great, however myself as well as a lot of other people on here have come across cars where the #80 will finish off with a haze, no matter which way you work it, in which case your better off going with the scratch X, or even using a finishing pad with the #80

First pic shows next door neighbours cat damage to bonnet ( hood )....then after 3 passes with Scatch X , all gone. :-)

"Use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

There's a lot of different paint systems on the market and paint systems area always changing as we've demonstrated on this forum, in fact there's a thread about this in Hot Topics.

So do a Test Spot first, see if ScratchX is aggressive enough to remove the swirls out of the paint on your car, if not you can always substitute a more aggressive product.

Re: ScratchX and a DA work great together!

I just tried the Scratch-X/DA route to deal with some very light holograms from rotary/M82/black Meguiars finishing pad. It seemed to work pretty well- it knocked out the holograms and left a pretty clear finish on my first try, seemingly without the typical haze I was getting with M80 and M82.

Should I be using a polishing pad with this product/machine combo? I think it broke down pretty well with the finishing pad, but I've never used Scratch-x with a machine so I don't know. I thought it maybe would go completely clear, but that wasn't the case. There was a light film.

I can imagine the pad selection depends on the car. It's a Nissan Altima and I think it has softer paint, so I figure a finishing pad would maybe be more effective.
