  • How to fix Hazing/swirls

    All,

I am about to order the G100.

I am having a hazing problem with my paint. This is a car my son bought for $1000 and we painted, wet sanding and then used just cheap turtle wax polishing compond. New wheels and tires and here is the car just after this process:

It looked OK, but seems to be getting worse (hazing/oxidizing). I also have a cheap rotary (not a pro, just did not want to spend a lot of time polishing after wet sanding). I have since tried using some Meguiar's #7 just to make it shine a bit more (waiting on wax for a while). This seems to work for a while. My next plan is to buy the G100 and pads and product and work from a more aggresive to less agressive polish ex. #83 with an W8006 pad, #80 with an W8006 pad, #21 with a 9006 pad and maybe #7 with a W9006 pad.

Just as another side note this paint is a lacquer paint without clear coat.

If anyone has any other ideas I am open. Here are a few shots showing the hazing. BTW - this is a 88 Honda Accord. I will learn on this and then move over to my Lexus

Here is a close up to show the hazing/swirls:

(Mike Phillips - notice the technique of focusing on the hand to show the swirls!!!)

Thanks for any and all help!

    Mike

It is a enamal, or acrylic enamal

Actually we painted it via this method: (scroll down to see what 69chargeryeehaa says).

      part 2 of this thread:

Be ready to read this thread is about 80 pages. Hold down the giggles also when you first start and see some of the results. We only had $1000 in this car and did not want to spend a bunch on painting. Let me know your thoughts. I am just to point to get black free of the swirls and haze.

        Painted with a roller???

Ok, it's a decent job for a car in very bad shape, but I wouldn't paint my car with that. I rather order an aerosol can or the paint and do prime, base, clearcoat myself (for a whole car a gun and a compressor is mandatory though) I believe there's a reason why car companies do not use rustoleum paint.

            Hi mstrange,

Read through the links and found them interesting as I was looking for a paint to try this idea on our 59 Cadillac. In theory, it doesn't matter how you get the paint onto the car if you're going to wet-sand, cut and buff afterwards. In reality, as many on this forum know by reading this forum and as sadly some know by having their car painted only to receive a swirled out mess, it's the guy, (or girl), that does the wet-sanding, cutting and buffing that makes or breaks a great paint job.

It's 6:30am as I type this and I have to get ready to leave for SEMA and thus shut my computer down as I'll be taking it with me and posting live from the show, so I can't really post much after I hit the Submit Reply button on this post.

That said, I feel confident that if you follow the instruction posted here,

Using the G-100 to remove swirls with the Professional Line

You'll get the deep, wet shine you're looking for. The key is to only work a small section at at time, don't try to hurry and tackle a large section at one time, at least not until you get a feel for how soft or hard the paint is. The softer the paint, the larger the area you can tackle.

The reason for this is because the process of removing swirls, haze, etchings, scratches, etc., is the process of carefully removing paint in a way the produces a smooth, high gloss finish. The G100 Dual Action Polisher is a very gentle tool and this is why it's so popular... it won't burn or swirl the paint, but because it's gentle tool, it also doesn't remove a lot of paint quickly, thus you have to take your time and only work a small section at at time.

A small section would be about 16" to 20" square, basically lay-out your average microfiber polishing cloth and use that as a guide. If you find the swirls and haze are coming out easily and quickly, this would be an indicator the paint was fairly soft and you could then tackle a large section at one time, but this should still be about 2" squared.

The Rolls Royce we worked on last Saturday had a single-stage finish and it buffed very easily with the new ScratchX using a W-8006 polishing pad.

Here's the before pictures of the Bentley we warmed over using ScratchX by hand, with a G100 Dual Action Polisher and M80 Speed Glaze to show what could be done using quality products and the proper technique.

I haven't obtained the after pictures yet but I will but I assure you everyone present was blown away at how easy it was to remove the horrific buffer swirls when using the right product with the proper technique.

When following the steps in the how-to article linked above, start with M80 and see if it will work for you, if not you can always then go to the M83.

By the way, I had to repaint a portion of the black stripe on my Sanger Drag Boat one time and I used Rustoleum Gloss Black Enamel in a can and applied it with a brush. I let it dry for over a week and then wet-sanded it and then buffed it out and no one could tell.

So I know it can be done.

Oh My!! The G100 and Meguiar's is AMAZING!!!!

              All,

I received my G100A today with pads and Meguiar's product. All I can say is WOW! I used #83, then #80 then #21. I split the area with tape and paper to see the difference and have to following results on a trunk lid.

This tool and product are GREAT! Thanks to all on this board and Mike Phillips. Also a quick plug for the DVD. I watched the DVD purchased the G100, pads and product and did as was instructed. Now this is what black should look like!

Congratulations on your quest to make a vehicle look better. The addition of the products and machine that you mention are and will be a great addition to your arsenal to maintain black.

Keep up the good work and show the final outcome of the vehicle when you have completed it.

That will look better than a lot of cars once you get all the way around with the G-100. Dont forget a little dressing for the plastic trim.

                        Benhui86,

The good news about this is I can wet sand any peel out or even touchup the paint in an area pretty easily. For now I was trying to get it to shine! This car was a $1000 car for my son, the real project will be my Lexus for the polishing. I do love the G100!!!! Thanks again to all on this board.
