  • Red 7 after DA workout

I was debating about getting the DA for my car and finally gave in. Figured that for the cost of one buff job at the local car wash I could buy everything and do the work myself.

Used the standard stuff as recommended for a car with swirl marks. Took about three hours and the car is 100% better. I will probably do another detailing session since there are a couple of spots that need more work.

Washed the car at local self serve on a Sunday. No one there so I could keep the car in the bay and stay in the shade. I live in an apartment with no hose or electricity (poor me). So I also had to get an inverter. Looked kind of wierd but worked perfectly.

    Some things that stand out:

    1. The recommendation to tape the car is correct. Saves time, mistakes and cleanup in the long run.
    2. Made the fatal error of picking up the buffer before it stopped. Thousands of tiny specks all over the car inside and out. Came off OK but I will never make that mistake again.
    3. Inverter worked liked a charm, thanks EBAY...
    4. Auto Detailing Supplies is awsome, great prices and quick delivery.
    5. As time went on I slowed my buffer movement and the results got better.
    6. Applying wax was very easy and goes on so thin that it wipes off by hand quickly.
    7. I cleaned the buffer pad with water (I know its not recommended) but it was so caked up I gave in. Cleaned to like new. If the backing comes off eventually I will just buy a new pad. Wax pad was another story since water does nothing. I just squeezed out the excess wax (a lot).
    8. Next time I may try and buff at night in a parking lot near my house under some strong hallogen lights. This would avoid a hot day. You also seem to notice surface imperfections more as long as the lights are strong.

    Saves time, doesn't waste time.

Most people make this mistake at some point in time, but... they only make it once!

Most people when they start out get in a hurry plus the sound of the motor spinning the pad quickly for some reason acts to make people want to move quickly along with it. Doesn't work that way.

    6. Applying wax was very easy and goes on so thin that it wipes off by hand quickly.
People ask all the time on this forum if they'll get better results by hand or machine... thank you for answering this question with just one key benefit to working by machine.

Sounds like you made it all work even with the limitations of living in an apartment.

This might be helpful to you.... I wash my PC's pads with Dish Soap and water... let them soak for ten min or so in the kitchen sink (water/dish soap) and then press them against the bottom of the sink in the water/soap solution to remove excess wax/polish/cleaner. Rinse and stand the pads on end and allow to air dry. This process works well for me and I have only had one issue with pad problems.

Car looks good! I went ahead and bought the PC for my car too. Got it last week and used it that following weekend. Did two cars, a 1958 Ford Skyliner and a 2002 Ford ZX2. I was totally beat, but the cars looked better than ever. Hopefully the next time I detail them again the weather will be cooler so I can take more time to it. These 100+ degree days are murder when it comes to detailing. Congrats on your detail work!!

            Inverter?

            BillM,
Could you please tell me more about the inverter.I also live in an apartment and was looking at the 750 watt inverter at Lowe's and was thinking about buying it.Can you give more detail:etc: how long before you ran the motor while using the PC. Did it run down your battery? And anything else you can think of.

            Thanks so much.

              This is the one: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...=DF&cm_ite=gen

Its available in Lowes, Home Depot, etc for around $70.

I got it off ebay for $35 + $15 shipping, new in plastic.

My car has a small battery so I was a bit worried about hooking up the inverter but as it turned out I used the DA on and off for over 3 hours without a problem. I never started the car. The inverter has a fan, overload, and temp protection and is good for 1500w inrush. The DA is something like 350W. Obviously if your battery is in bad shape you might end up with a dead battery but the inverter is supposed to shut off if the voltage goes too low to avoid this.

              What I found out:
You will need an extention cord to reach around the entire car.

The cables that attach to the battery are not long enough to put the inverter on the floor. You will need to put it on something or make cable extensions. I just put it on top of my overturned wash bucket.

Cover the connections you make to the battery (using the aligator clips) with some insulation. This way when you close the hood you dont accidentally short out the red (hot) lead. In my lazy ways I just used a towel to cover the connections.

If you want to close the hood while working you will need to route the cables down through the engine bay to allow you to fully close the hood. I just closed the hood as much as possible and routed the cable out the front. Didnt seem to be a problem when pushing down on the hood while buffing.

Tape the car, work in the shade on a cool day, take your time, dont pick up the buffer when spinning and enjoy the shine...

Actually that picture is bad quality. I had my camera set incorrectly. I will try and post a couple of better pics later.
