No! I absolutely love the LGM (make sure you have a heated model). Spray some APC+ on a carpet, agitate with a brush, the use plain hot water to extract and it work AMAZING!
As for your previous method, that works too, as long as you aren't dumping water on the interior of your car. With the floor mats, you can hose them off with as much water as you want, vacuum, then leave out in the sun to dry. Make sure they are dry through before you put them back in your car.
I'd give the LGM a shot.
