  • Steering Wheel Cracking/Wearing Out

I couldn't find this in the other threads so I thought I'd create a new one.

The top part of the steering wheel (vinyl I beleive) in my '00 Accord is wearing out & cracking. This is the part where I usually put my hand on while I'm driving. It's not all that bad but I would like to prevent it as much as I can.
I guess the oil from my hands has done this to the top part of the wheel.

What's the best way to protect that area on the steering wheel? Just wipe with Natural Shine Vinyl Protectant and keep following up with QID?

I really don't want that area to be slippery because I prefer to have a good grip on the wheel while driving (who doesn't ).

    Thats a tough one.

I can put dressings on mine, with wiping off excess, because my steering wheel has a deep texture to it.

You can use APC and QID more often for good cleanings, thats for sure.

On rubber pedals I use APC or APC+ and just scrub them clean with a stiff brush.

About the steering wheel though...I agree with Murr, cleaning it often with a mild cleaner is probably you best bet.

Clean and protect it, and then get a steering wheel cover.

Thanks for that info. I think I'll try the APC and QID.

I actually never used anything on the steering wheel because I was worried it might make it too slippery or deteriorate it. But now I know I need to take care of it...

I did however clean the center piece where the Honda embelm is.

Which steering wheel cover do you use?

I just hate the feel of the cheap fake leather ones you get at Target or Walmart. Even the cloth ones are so big...just hate it.

I was thinking of spending some money on the good quality leather ones which are pretty thin.

What type of car is it? Some car manufactures will re-stitch the wheel for a small fee.

It's a 2000 Honda Accord. It doesn't have a leather wrapped steering wheel so there's really no stitching on it.

I have to agree with Tyler and Murr. Keep it clean and get a cover for it. Where to get a good quality cover , I do not know. Hopefully someone else will have that answer.

I use the synthetic leather one from Wal Mart in my Roush and a rubber/vinyl Ford one I got at Kragen in my truck. The feel of either of them doesn't bother me though. Plus, they make the steering wheel feel much thicker, which is heaven to me because it gives my gorilla hands something to grab onto.

                          Re: Steering Wheel Cracking/Wearing Out

I use Natural Shine on mine and I apply it at night when I know I won't be driving it and I also wipe the excess off a few times. The end result is still a little bit slippery wheel, but after a day or two it wears off and it gets back to normal. I do this maybe once every other month or so or if I notice that the leather on my wheel is unusually dry.

Another note we should take from this thread is prevention of a dirty/oily wheel. While leaving my current job (accountant in an office all day, doing nothing significant to make my hands dirty), I don't worry about it. But, I used to work construction and would always keep a tube (or something similiar) or a waterless hand cleaner/degreaser to prevent dirty hands in the car.

I also keep a big terry cloth towel over my center console to help keep my hands clean (from my construction days). Now, I'm so used to driving with an extra inch from the towel that I can't really not drive with it, so I can understand the whole cover on the wheel thing as well. Just some thoughts.

Good point on keeping some sort of a hand cleaner in the car.
