  • In need of a bit of help here

    Hello everybody,

So I recently transitioned from the Acura Legend that I was driving before to a Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo. If that name isn't ringing a bell, it was manufactured in the United States under the name 3000GT VR-4 (though the body style was used by Dodge in their sports car, the Stealth).

What I am writing about is that I am having a lot of trouble with the engine on this. I can work with the rest of the car just fine if I decide to put in the time. I have enough of a background with paint, wheels, tires, and interior care to get that done pretty well.

But with the engine, I am just stuck. There are a lot of problems that I am running into. For one thing, I am completely ignorant as to what I am supposed to be covering up with plastic bags. I just don't have the information here. And not knowing it, I don't want to start spraying water into this engine. It's too nice (relative to the Legend) for me to take risks with.

For another thing, I am having a lot of trouble coming up with ideas on how to clean up the aluminum and metal parts of the engine. My best idea is to throw in Greased Lightning Degreaser and work it in with a stiff bristle brush, but I have no idea if this would be too strong or not.

Finally, I do not know what to do about dressing the black rubber parts. I have seen a lot of people referring to Meguiar's products that I have never seen in stores before. I'm the sort of person who would greatly prefer to get the product I'm going to use at the store rather than online. And to be honest, the Hyper Dressing that I saw on the website was priced at 42 dollars, which is way more than I would be willing to spend on something like this.

In the past, I have just used interior products such as Armor All. The problem is that it really doesn't shine all that much, and it is such a pain to apply it.

Does anybody have any input on how I should go about this?

    Imperiex:

I have some of the questions and concerns as you. I've been reading through the other threads in this section looking for ideas and techniques.

I'm looking for the least aggressive method that yields the desired results. I'm also looking for methods that don't involve scrubbing or rubbing as it would be to difficult on my motor.

The method that interests me the most so far is spraying the compartment with APC, let it soak for a few minutes and then gently rinse off or use a pressure washer keeping the wand well back from the motor. After that apply hyper dressing and allow to dry.

On my motor the alternator is the only thing that doesn't look protected from the elements. I' assuming the other components would be okay provided you don't get close with a pressure washer and force moisture into places where it would cause a problem.

For now I'm still looking for ideas and not ready to actually try cleaning the engine compartment.

    Regards...

sometimes i take a wet terry towel with some All purpose or degreaser on it and wipe everything down, I do this with cars that have a lot of after markets parts in the engine. This gets the engine clean for me and its not as risky as spraying the whole thing with water ,

P.S, be careful with the aluminum, you don't want to get any harsh chemicals on it

This could possibly take days. A degreaser should not stain aluminum, but don't take my word for it.

Thanks everyone. Hyper Dressing seems a bit outside of what would be feasible for me at this juncture. Any ideas on a cheaper (and more accessible) alternative?

Use any type of dressing...tire gel, interior spray dressing, tire spray, rubber dressing, etc...

There are all sorts at your local stores and any of it will work.

Well everyone, I went for Armor All, basically just sprayed down the entirety of the engine compartment. The rubber at least. Granted, the white paint is still dirty, I'm going to have to get that much of it clean.

Here's what I did though. I had talked to one of the mechanics at the dealership I work at, and he basically knows something about everything. And car detailing is one of his little prides. And what he said was that I could spray it down with armor all, and I wouldn't need to rub it around or clean up or anything. Just let it dry.

So I did it. And it turned out pretty great! I haven't got a digital camera though, so i can't give any pictures just yet. Sorry

Use a spray bottle with degreaser, and one with hot water. Have some cold water on hand for rinsing too, and maybe some brushes.

Spray a small section with hot water, then Degreaser, let it sit for a minute, scrub with a tooth brush or detail brush, and rinse with a cup of water. Repeat all areas needed.
On really dirty engines I have used Castrol Purple Power cleaner, but I'm sure the Meguiar's brand works well too. (gotta plug the admins' products)

Just do small sections at a time. Yes, this takes longer but it does work. I have done several engines that way. The first time is always the worst.

I have used armor all on the rubber hoses and plastic pieces too, and it holds up fine.
