Is it okay to use ultimate protectant on engine plastics? I have that and ASD but it seems nearly everyone uses hyperdressing instead.

Re: okay to use UP?
I'm really not sure to be honest. I use Hyperdressing as well. I dont think ASD would be a good choice since its solivent based and that MAY cause fire hazards (i dont KNOW this but for me it would be a concern).
HD is waterbased so i can just basically spray the whole damn engine area and let it land where it may. Then i just let it set for a few minutes, start the engine for a few minutes after that and let the heat help everythign dry, then just use a MF cloth (old one) to wipe up excess dressing and i'm all set
Here's a write up I did with pics etc. I've only done a couple engines but they turned out great and the method was very simple. Hope this helps: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/...rd-taurus.html

Re: okay to use UP?
When the engine bay is not that dirty, a lot of people just spray the dressing on all the plastic parts and leave it to dry. Since you can't spray UP, I would think the convenience factor would come into play for that reason. Otherwise, if you apply it directly to the engine parts, as to effectiveness or safety, that I don't know.

Re: okay to use UP?
Looks like I may have to invest in some HD! I'm also concerned about a fire hazard with the ASD. I also wonder if HD may be more tollerant of high temps found in the engine compartment. Convience isn't teally an issue anymore- I'm going to c lay and wax the compartment anyway.

Re: okay to use UP?
Ultimate Protectant can be used on plastics in the engine bay without issue. On some of the larger pieces it's easy enough to apply it lightly (ie, properly) and get a great appearance that won't attract dust.
Of course, the "spray it and walk away" convenience of Hyper Dressing is what makes that product so popular for engine bay dressing. UP is just packed in such a way that you can't really do this.Michael Stoops

This should help. It is lotion-like and comes in a squeeze bottle. As the above thread shows, it applies more like a wax than a typical protectant, sparingly in repetitive motions with a foam applicator.

Good thread, and great results too. Thanks Mary.

Re: okay to use UP?
I applied UP on under hood plastic components with great results. The dry film holds up well and does not attract dust like other protectants. I have been using UP since it hit the shelves last year and have fallen in love with this stuff. I even used it on the vinyl covered railing on my deck with awsome results and am considering trying it on the vinyl window frames on the house.
