  • Tire Shine sling mistake.

I made a boo-boo taoday. I have been working on using all my Insane shine up before switching over to hyper-dressing. Well, last night I ran out of IS and made the switch. The mistake I made was to apply HD over IS. OOPS!. Sling city. I now have a poka dotted white truck.

My own fault. Should have washed the tires before putting one product over the other.

I had actually thought I applied the HD pretty lightly and even went back with a dry applicator to mop up any residual stuff. But I guess with the tire already having the IS on it, it kept the HD from setting up properly. So now I get to go out in the rain and and try to run a little QD around to remove the spots.

Just figured I would put this out as a lesson learned.

Interesting post. Could be true for many tire products, not just Insne Shine.

Yep, One of those mistakes where 20/20 hindsight came into play. I should have known better.

I have been pretty lucky with the Insane Shine thus far. It did take me a few weeks to develope my technique though. I use the Eagle One Tire Swipe to apply then find something else to work on for a bit then use the same tire swipe and go over them again without adding product to the applicator. Once this is done, I again use the same tire swipe, without adding product. and "DAB" at the lettering and any areas that might accumulate product.

Judging from the drip marks I have seen "I think" most of my sling has been coming from the seam where my tire meets my rim. I never thought about that before so I starting making an effort at "going thin" when applying product close to them rim.

i always use a tire applicator to spread dressing around & evenly into the tire, in the inner and outer part of the wheel especially in the tire tread. when doing so, i don't really have a problem with sling as much than just spraying it on and walking away.

Yeah, I hate the sling. I use a different companies tire stuff, and it doesnt sling at all. Unfortunately, it is also more of a matte black. Still, better than blooming brown.

I wonder if the stuff that causes shine is also the stuff that helps sling...

                Hi Jeff,

The amount of sling is generally caused by many factors including the wheel/tire bead design, lettering on the sidewall, and how well the tire dressing is wiped off after allowing it to sit on the tire for 5 minutes (the amount of time that I allow the dressing to set-up). If you thoroughly wipe down the tire after allowing the dressing to sit for a while, you will retain the majority of the gloss and will reduce/eliminate sling. I mostly use Meguiar's All Season Dressing which leaves the tire looking fantastic IMO, and have zero sling!

But as you point out, if your tires offer a bead rim protector like some BFG tires, that rim/lip will need extra attention from any product that may be pooled in that area.

Here is Meg's All Season Dressing on the tire, and NXT on the wheels:

                  Tim,
I think my trouble this time came from applying the Hyper Dressing over the Insane Shine. I think the layer of Insane Shine kept the Hyper Dressing from "sticking", for lack of a better word.

                    Hey Jeff,

Very well could be the reson. Tire dressings will repel the elements in order to keep the tire looking "dressed". Therefore, it is quite likely that the previous coating was still working very well and prevented the new dressing from being adhered to the tire properly.

Yes, i suspect same. I has Insane Shine down pretty well. Have not seen much sling at all. I do get the little droplets of film from it if I apply, say, within 24 hours prior to a rain. But I guess that can be expected to a degree. I can live with that.

Trying Hyper Dressing now. I got the Sample bottle from ADS as well as the Gallon. Figured I had better try something I might be able to make go a little farther as I have 4 vehicles sitting in the driveway to contend with. It did not take me long to go through a can of IS. I might try the All-Season stuff next once I go through my sample bottle of HD.

I usually spend around 3-4 minutes per tire when I dress mine with Endurance High Gloss. After applying, I just go back and forth over the tire with my tire swipe to make the entire application uniform / pick up the leftover material.

I feel that I dont clean my tires properly. I usually just spray the tires with a pressure washer, and sometimes wipe the tire with a cheap terry cloth towel. Any suggestions?

I got this sling issue because I did not wash the tires prior to applying the Hyper-Dressing that I am trying now.

Sounds like you have figured out the problem, but FWIW.... After I apply Hyper-dressing to my tires, I let it set up, then use a blower to dry the dressing. It blows any build up out of the ribbed sections of the tires and prevents sling.
