  • Scratch X too Aggressive?

It has been awhile since I last visited, because I was taken care of so well when I first received my DA, but I'm back with probably some more newbie questions.

Last weekend I washed my car and got it looking great, and called it a day. Later that night I walked out into my garage and noticed a water streak down from my passenger and driver's side mirrors. Those with Corvettes are probably well aware of this problem. No matter how hard I try to keep up with the drips in these problem areas, water magically appears. I have even used a blower to try and "blow" the water from these seals but to no avail. But I digress.....

I hit the streaks with some Speed Detailer, but it didn't come off. It had dried and left some nice white lines running down my door. Being a black car, they really showed up. So I went and grabbed my Scratch X and went to work on it. The SX took it off nicely, but yesterday when walking out to my car I saw almost like a hologram effect of where I was working.

Was I being dumb in really working the SX. I thought I remembered someone here (MOL) saying that you can really work the SX and should use it until the diminishing abrasives break down. Did I work it too long? I followed the application SX with some NXT (all by hand), but it almost looks like I need to pull out the DA and use some #80 to get rid of what I had done. Seems a little counter productive when I could have just used the #80?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If the surrounding areas have all been polished with M80 using a dual action polisher then it's going to be hard to produce as nice a finish by hand.

    The question often comes up,

Can a dual action polisher really improve the results I can produce by hand?

And the answer of course is "Yes"

Depending upon your skill level it is possible to produce a very, very nice finish by hand products like ScratchX, a polish and a wax, but the easy way out is to re-polish the area with the M80 Speed Glaze and then go to wax.

i don't have a corvette, but I do own a black Chevy. I removed some pretty deep scratches yesterday using SX and a terry towel. I was rubbing pretty hard. It took the majority of the scrathes out, and I had no after effects of the Scratch X. Maybe you had something stuck in your applicator? I would maybe try another application of SX with a lighter touch, and a new applicator. It amy take a few passes, but it may ave you the hassle of breaking out the DA.

      Good luck,

what did you use to work the Scratch X in? If you used a teryy for you first appliction, or however many it took to remove the defect, for the last one, switch to a foam aplicator. It is more gentle and if there was any marks left fro mteh agressive terry the foam and SX will remove it.

I used a foam tech pad when applying the SX. My guess is that maybe the pad is old, though it looks and feels somewhat new. I always check my pads prior to using them, because one little grain of something and you are pulling out your hair in frustration.

What I guess bothers me the most, is that now I might be double guessing myself if I want to use SX again. I am pretty sure that SX is not the problem, its me. You can't have all these people claim that SX is the bomb and not believe them. It has to be me and my technique....somewhere I screwed up. SX is a fairly new tube, but the applicator pad is probably 2 years old. I'm guessing thats it.

          Thanks for the help.

having just gotten the Megs Defect removal video, it says on there that when using products with diminishing abrasives, that if you dont work them enough that you can be left with marks.

the easiest way to explain this is if you use a coarse W&D paper to rub something down, you keep changing up to finer and finer grades till the marks have gone.

if you dont go fine enough although you may have removed the original mark, the scratches from sanding havent been fully removed.

this may be what has happened?
