  • Issues with Single Stage Urethane on my 79 Z28

Hi, new here and trying to get some help. I painted my 79 Camaro Z28 with a single stage urethane (color - carmine). After that I waited a day or 2 and color sanded all my mistakes out. I started polishing with M105 and a burgundy DFC6 pad. I followed up with m205 and a yellow DFP6 pad. Gloss is incredible. I am very happy with it but if you look at it at an angle it has a haze that looks like the inside of an oyster shell or like an oil slick on water. The tool was a DA polisher set at about 4.5 speed. Am I using the wrong product? Doing something wrong? I am definitely new to all of this and any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I can't tell much from the pix. If you put something on the surface for the camera to focus on (a coin, finger, piece of painters' tape, ...) you might be able to get a better image.

              What was your sanding process?

The second picture of the roof shows it really good. The sanding process is 800, 1000, 1500, and 2000. It really has a good shine just hazy. I'll try to get better pics but I think the with the glass in it shows it well.

It's hard to tell from your pics, however it looks like you still have some orange peel remaining, although that could be some weird camera trick on my eyes. In either case, in the pic with the piece of tape I can see scratches remaining. The scratches are what is more than likely causing the hazing and would need to be removed.

The scratches don't look too deep from the pics and assuming that is the case, reapply the M205 in a smaller 12" x 12" test spot and see how it turns out before proceeding to do any further areas. Examine the test spot under a variety of light sources and in the sun if possible. Dial in the best process in this spot.

To be clear, you used a DA to apply the M105 & M205?

That's not orange peel. It's the oil slick or oyster shell look that I was talking about. Yes, I used a DA for the M105 and M205.

It is possible it could be the actual paint mixture.

                          I would doubt it.

So the weird "mother of pearl" look we're seeing in these images is actually what you see in real life? That is really weird, to say the least.

There is definitely still a lot of texture in this paint as can be seen in the reflection of the housing from the overhead light. You mentioned speed 4.5 (roughly) on a DA with a 6" foam cutting pad and M105 but you didn't mention which DA. Honestly, we wouldn't expect a typical DA (Porter Cable, Harbor Freight, etc) to be quite up to the task at that speed setting with a foam pad. A high torque DA like the MT300 or even a Rupes 21 could probably remove the sanding marks with a foam pad, but we'd still go microfiber for the increase in cut and commensurate decrease in time. It's also because of this, and what we see in the images, that leads us to believe that you still haven't removed all of the sanding marks with your process.

Yes, the "mother of pearl" effect is what I see in real life. It is a harbor freight or Chicago electric DA . I had to start somewhere. I do see some sanding marks in the paint still and was hoping polishing with the burgundy pad would take them out. Should I use a microfiber bonnet over the burgundy pad, then just the burgundy, and then the yellow? I do care about the scratches but the "mother of pearl" effect bothers me the most. It polishes out very clear and shiny but when it sets for 15-20 minutes the effect comes back and makes it look very poor.
