  • Wax spreader

I don't know if I am doing the right thing, but I have found that cheap orbital's "wax spreaders" polish better if you put enough pressure on them to make them spin backwards. Anyone else found this.

    Hey shanek,

If you have found that works for you with no issue then by all means continue.

I like using them with lighter pressure, and a terrycloth cloth bonnet to clean up paint. Been years since I used one. I've never had one spin backwards though.

I used to work at a car wash. The manager used to detail cars with one of those 6" wax spreaders. I remember coming to work one day, and it was on the ground in pieces next to a customer's van. He was a really strong dude. He grew up on his parents farm in the Ukraine, guy was super human. Anyways, yeah, he used so much pressure on that thing that he literally crushed it. Never seen anything like that...

Spinning backwards is an optical illusion.

Definitely an illusion, and from personal experience, if you put too much pressure on those little orbitals, they burn out quite nicely. That said, they are a dandy little tool for spreading wax (and for some mild polishing with ColorX or Black wax) and I use mine a lot. I take the wax off by hand.

I am not convinced it is an illusion, but how I make it appear to spin backwards, is you put enough pressure on it to stop it spinning then you move it left or right then it appears to spin backwards.
