    Re: UP pad recommendation

Ultimate Polish Can be used to completely remove light scratches & swirls. Back when I 1st got my DA polisher, I got my folks old Chevy Trailblazer completely swirl free with just Ultimate Polish w/LC Flat Foam Polishing Pads.

    Went from this

    To this

I also got this Tacoma completely swirl free with M205 and a LC Flat Foam Polishing Pad.

It's incorrect to say you could apply Ultimate Polish or M205 every week and not make a dent in your clear coat. At least not with a machine..

If you were to want to polish your paint every week and not worry about making a dent in your clearcoat, use Meguiars D302 Polish w/Black Finishing Pad. It's a pure polish and contains no abrasives.

    Not all paint is hard.

Thanks all. I'll be working on a Nissan Maxima, a Tacoma, two Honda pilots, and a 4Runner. Not sure about the others, but I think my Tacoma is pretty soft.

I've got a feeling all those paints will be soft. lol.

Always start with a test spot using the least aggressive method

Oh nothing really it's just that I have a Tacoma which was easy to polish. My neighbor has a Honda Pilot which was even easier to correct, and I figure the Toyota 4 Runner could be similar to the Tacoma paint. So you might be in for smooth sailing. Good luck.

I stand by what I said. UP is not doing the correction. Your pad is, to the extent any correction is actually happening. The oils are great at hiding minor defects temporarily, as are the waxes we're using, but after a few washes and some rain, there they are again. If your paint is really that soft, though, your pad/method is too aggressive. It's not about hard vs soft, but using the right tools for the job. Beyond that, I think you're just being fooled by oils and waxes.

                  Re: UP pad recommendation

@TopGear. I'd be more willing to agree with you if you were talking about an AIO/Cleaner Wax..

But Ultimate Polish is way less of a cover up than a cleaner wax. Sure if you used it with a finishing pad it might result in what you're describing, but I can tell you without a doubt it's not hiding any defects on this Tacoma. It's been a year and a half and it's still swirl free.

And personally, I've never seen a wax that could properly live up to the claims of hiding swirls. This paint was soft to correct, but it's not soft as far as being sensitive after the fact. I say that because I'm carefree when it comes to waterless/rinseless washing this truck and it's Still swirl free a year and a half later.

The Trailblazer was sold long ago. So M205 w/a polishing pad on that Tacoma will have to do in order to prove it doesn't just hide defects. It removes swirls.

Just because it won't make a dent in your hard paint doesn't mean it won't do the job on a different vehicle. That being said, Ultimate Polish sure as heck wouldn't do a thing to remove the last 10% that needs correcting on certain areas on my Cadillacs hard paint. Nothing will. All paints aren't the same.

Do you think I'll be ok with a LC white pad on the Tacoma? I've heard of guys getting hazing on soft paint with a white pad. I'd rather not do a two-step process.

It's too hard to say without being there.. Your test spot will provide the accurate answer to that question.

It can. I've removed 2000 grit with it, and a blue hex logic polishing pad. It has a light abrasive load.
