  • Tiny Bump'les... o?

    Hi,

So I purchased a new Kia K900 five months ago. I was told that I could wax it right away if I wanted to so I did. Using all Meguires product the Midnight Sparkle (Black) finish came out looking and feeling like polished glass. It's been religiously hand washed and maintained with the Ultra Shine spray ever since with the occasional clean and rewax on the front and wear areas of the car. Until a few days ago the finish was as always, smooth as glass with a deep shine. Well now it has developed tiny invisible bumps everywhere. Not just one the top but the sides as well. If I lightly scrape them with my thumb they come off but there are thousands of them everywhere so it's not practical to do the entire car with my thumb and I'm concerned over using a rubbing compound on this new finish.

I've never used clay or abrasives on it and as I said it's everywhere on the car.

So, any thoughts as to what the bumps might be and how I might get rid of them without risking damage to the finish?

    Tks,

    Dave

The same thing happened to me, more than likely tree sap.
I clayed then used a fine polish( Ultimate polish) and my flex with a LC blue, then waxed again.
You might try clay and see how far it gets you.

Give it a whirl as you really can't mess up. Just make sure you keep the defined area to clay misted with some kind of clay lube.

It sounds like you have some sort of surface contaminant on the paint. Give claying a shot. It's not that difficult to use. You can pick up the clay kit at any local store.

        Hi,

Ok, thanks to both of you for the quick response and the info.

Now I have to learn how to Clay the finish without ruining it.

        Tks,

        Dave

There are a million ways that contaminants can land on, and stick to, your paint finish. It could be overspray from any number of sources, too. The building across the street from our offices here in Irvine, CA has a large blue aluminum awning like structure on it and it was repainted a couple of years ago. The painters put huge plastic sheets over all the cars in the lot before spray painting the awning but we're pretty confident they didn't get everything covered and somewhere along the line they got over spray on some cars. In fact, I know someone who works in that building and he left his black BMW 1 Series at home that week, driving his old beater instead, just because he knew the potential for over spray was huge. If it had been windy enough, the cars in our lot across the street would have been subject to the same problems, but fortunately the bulk of our parking is behind our building so we had a substantial safety zone!

Tree sap mist is another strong possiblity, as has been mentioned. The good news is that you can easily remove whatever it is on your K900 with your thumbnail, so clay should make quick work of it. Check out this thread on claying - it's actually incredibly simple to do.
