Meguiar's Quik Tips Video Series - Claying
After viewing the video clip you can scroll down for a step by step refresher, complete with still images shot during the filming of the video.
Please keep in mind that this video, and the others in the series, are not designed to be definitive how to guides but rather, as the name implies, Quik Tips that address the most common questions and mistakes associated with each topic.
Your car is constantly bombarded with tree sap mist, over spray, fallout and even road tar that can easily bond to your paint's surface creating a rough feel and poor reflections. Keep in mind that clear reflections & long lasting protection can only be achieved when the surface of your paint is smooth as glass.
Start by washing and drying your car thoroughly, then rub the face of your clean hand across the top surfaces. Now don't be surprised if it feels rough. Those are bonded contaminants that must be removed before you polish or wax…and our Smooth Surface Clay Kit is just the right choice to correct the problem. It's quick, easy and you don't even need to be a "pro".
To begin the claying process, remove the clay from the package and flatten it into a palm sized piece.
Mist the supplied Quik Detailer liberally onto the surface for lubrication and begin working one section at a time with light pressure in a back and forth motion. As you work, you'll begin to feel the difference immediately.
If the clay ever sticks to the surface then you need more lubrication, so spray a bit more Quik Detailer onto the area being clayed. You do need to keep the area well lubricated, but you do not need to use a lot of pressure on the clay itself. Just enough to pressure to keep it from falling is all that's really needed - let the clay do the work.
The clay will remove the bonded contaminants from the paint, and you can actually feel the clay begin to glide more and more smoothly as it does. Once the paint feels smooth to the touch, move on to the next section. As you can see, the surface of the clay will become dirty and discolored from the contaminants, so fold and knead the clay often to reveal a clean portion and continue working around the entire vehicle.
As you finish working an area, wipe it dry with the supplied Supreme Shine Microfiber towel before moving on to the next section.
The clay will pick up large pieces of debris if dropped on the floor, and you will never be able to remove it all. You definitely do not want this foreign material to contact your paint, so just throw the clay away if you do drop it, and continue with a fresh piece.
Now that your paint is "as smooth as glass" apply your favorite Meguiar's polish and wax for maximum gloss and protection !
