  • What to use on these wheels ?

Hi, I have a 2015 VW Gti, which has the stock VW Austin wheels. Which seem to be a machine polished aluminum which are partly painted, with black, and the metal machined aluminum though grooved, is protected by what seems to me a clear coat.

So with that in mind, what is the best way to seal these off? Just take them off, clay, then seal with ULW ? or should i be looking at something more protective?

    Thanks in advance.

You can do what you just said. ULW won't last that long due to the heat generated by that area. You will have to reapply as needed. You could give them a good polish as well prior to sealing them. You could also maintain with UQW/D156 until the next full seal.

If you want something more durable I would go with either a wheel coating or Brake Dust Barrier (offered by Meguiar's). It's more durable than ULW on wheels. If you do go with brake dust barrier than be sure to remove any polishing oils so that it can bond to the wheels. It will leave an orange peel effect. You won't notice unless you look at it real close. Especially on black. Works very well and is quite durable.

Here's the full thread on it.

Agreed wth guz. I haven't tried it but brake dust barrier seems to be the rave for anyone who tries it. Plus he knows what he's talking about since this guy is contestantly buying and testing just about every product out there.

Hey mike I was at the store today and thought IDE looking their isle at meijers. It's like a walmart target type storeif your not familiar. But black magic has a tire dressing that looked like it had a shine with silver glitter effect. U gonna try this out seeing as u buy something use it once and then seem to donate it away. Lol anyway what's ur take on this if u seen it. Not for me but looked interesting

It's all about buying and trading and trying new things . Brake dust barrier is nice. I polished up my wheels on my daily driver about a month ago and brake dust barrier was still on the wheels. I would say it was a good 3-4 months since I had done it. I could still see the orange peel effect from it. It came off with a little M205 and my PC7424XP. Makes life easier to clean the wheels with just soap and water.

Years ago black magic offered tire tint. I remembered they offered a few colors such as red, yellow, purple and silver. I know my brother used the red one when he was in high school almost 15 years ago. He was going through his ricer phase at that time lol.

Is this what you are talking about?

According to the last post from those links Gus brake dust barrier from meguiars has been discontinued. I checked on Amazon and it was over $20. Also ADS didn't have any.

          Any reason why ?

            Maybe VOC's got to this.

It's listed here but not sure if it is available. Be sure to have the wheel completely dry before applying or you will end up with white residue.
