  • Removing double sided tape from a mirror?

    Hi all,

A car I bought has a flat mirror double-sided taped to the original convex mirror on the right-hand side. However I prefer the original convex mirror. Since I prefer not to replace it when there is a perfectly good mirror underneath I was looking for suggestions on removing the new flat mirror (and the double sided tape connecting it).

I tried using fishing wire and I can cut into the tape pretty deep but around the centre there is a lot of resistance so I am hesitant to yank too hard without finding a way to soften the glue/tape. Anything I can pour in there that may soften the tape/glue for example (without damaging the car or mirror).

    Thanks in advance.

Try a solvent such as methylated spirits.

Failing that, Prepsol (or similar) wax & grease remover will do it.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Get u a plastic putty knife and just slowly pry it off. Once the mirror is off u can go back and scrap off the tape with a razor blade.

Got it off. It seems the guy not only used double sided tape but big globes of glue down the centre of the mirror. With a hairdryer and fishing wire I was able to cut most of the way through. The glued mirror cracked and broke and that made it easier picking it out off the glue.

For glue blobs I used wd40 and a blunt razer blade scraper to remove it. For the residue I ended up using a small amount of petrol and a rag to bring it back to original (didn't have metho on hand).

Thanks for the advice all. Very happy with the original (convex) mirror.

Separate question, any suggestions on removing a stubborn sticker? Hate it when people who work on the car put stickers on it. This ones dried out and I cant pick it off. Glass is also tinted:

Is the sticker on the outside of the window? (Tinting will be on the inside of the glass).

If the sticker is on the outside you can (carefully) use a razor blade to slide under an edge of the sticker and gradually lift it off. If you keep pulling at the part closest to the glass as you go it should come off it one piece. Then use a glass cleaner to clean up any sticky residue left behind.

                      ^^ Agreed.

If the glass cleaner doesn't work on the sticky residue, try a solvent again (give the petrol on a rag trick a go again).

Outside, will give it a shot. Thanks for the tips.

Of course! I hate it when people just **** information out of a forum (or person) and never give feedback (or say thanks). So I do my best to avoid being ungrateful on the interweb as well as in real life.
