  • Help with detailing a 2008 Jetstream Blue Corvette

Hello everyone This is my very first post aside from introducing myself. As you see from the title, I'm looking to do some work on my Corvette. The paint doesn't have any major flaws but some light scratches from I'm guessing a coin car wash brush or the wrong towels or just bad technique. Even with that said, the paint looks pretty good and about a month ago I was able to achieve a beautiful shine from just applying NXT 2.0. I am not the original owner of this car and so I don't really know any of the history of products or techniques used on it but I'm guessing this car was very well taken care of by its overall condition. I will be honest and say that after seeing only a small amount of internet posts, I went out and bought M105 & M205 and thought I'm set. I just received the Meguiar's DA polisher and have 7 inch 8207 polishing pads and 9207 finishing pads. This is my very first DA polisher and so I'm a rookie. All these products are obviously fantastic but I'm just not sure if I went a little overboard too soon. After some browsing around the forum, I'm thinking that maybe I should start with UC instead of M105 because I'm not sure I need ultimate cut yet. Any ideas? I have also learned from other posts, that the 7 inch 8207 will also add cut depending on the amount of pressure. In regards to the M205, it sounds as though I should be fine using this rather than rushing out and picking up ultimate polish. Again, I know all are great products and so I definitely am not trying to downplay any of Meguiar's line because I love everything from you guys! Please provide some insight on which product and pad I should use, sticking with what I already have plus picking up some ultimate compound. I plan on washing, claying, compounding, polishing, and waxing. After all this, would some last touch detailer or M34 be ok or is it unnecessary? Thanks everyone

As Meguiars recommends....do a test spot and start with the less aggressive product. Experiment, have fun and learn!

I agree with a test spot. Try M205 with a yellow pad first and see if it gives you the correction you are looking for. If you need to get more aggressive then you could go with M105 or UC on the yellow pad. Personally I would go with M105 over UC. The reason being that typically vette's have hard clear. But that is not always true. The test spot with M205 will tell you how the paint is reacting.

Other than that you got the process down. M34 or last touch is optional. A final wipedown is a good habit to do.

As others have mentioned, should start with the least aggressive method first.
However, it is my understanding that it is generally the case that Vettes have a pretty hard paint.

I thank you guys for your advice and will look towards starting with a test spot first. I wish that I didn't have to work tonight because the weather is great out! When I'm finally able to test everything out, I'll let you guys know how it went. Thanks again.

I have done a number of Corvettes. The Meguiars DA Microfiber system does an excellent job. I have also had excellent results with the M105/M205 combo.

Looking forward to seeing your results! Take lots of pictures.

RDVT4ME Thank you for your input. I'll be sure to take some pictures when I'm off next week and can finally get working on the vette.

In your experience with 105, does it sound like overkill for me to reach right for that?

I'd start with UC on a yellow pad.

If you're justing starting out, UC is more user friendly than M105 too, whilst still having plenty of cut (just a little less than M105).

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

that kind of depends on the level of correction needed. Therefore the reason for the test spot. You can start with M205 and the yellow pad. If that is not getting it done, then use M105 with the yellow foam pad and possibly follow up with M205 and the finishing pad.
