  • Need help maintaining my paint

I have 13 year old black paint (2001 Yukon). Last summer I spent time on these forums, got educated and washed, clayed, bought a DAPS and did a pass with ULC, followed by ULP, and sealed with ULW. My truck looked amazing, and while my paint wasn't perfect (first time with a DA), it had only very light swirls that were only noticeable in direct sunlight from certain angles. I maintained my paint successfully with 2 bucket washes and D115. This winter was terrible on the east coast and we had so many snow storms that she was constantly covered in salt and grime from the roads. I don't have a garage, so my only choice was the brushless carwash, in which I would go through and pull off without letting them dry it (just to get the salt/dirt off). Well the weather is warming up and I gave her a nice 2 bucket wash, which made me sick. I found some road rash which I'll buff out with ULC, but she's looking pretty swirled in direct sunlight. Still looks deep and glossy when not in the sunlight however. I have come to the realization that keeping a daily driver mostly swirl free where I live is impractical. Can anyone make suggestions or recommend a good wax that contains fillers? I feel that if I polish the swirls out any more, I'm going to make the clear coat fail.

    Thanks

Try the white wax or black wax. For a daily driver, they are easy to use and perform minor correction / fill. If you use with a DA and polishing pad as it states on the back of tube, I've found the black wax covers 80-90% of defects and is reasonably durable if you top it with the UQW.

You will be fine if you polish again. If you don't want to polish agian then try white wax. It has more cleaning ability than black wax. Or try both and see which you like best. You could even top it off with something more durable like UW.

Thanks guys, I'm going to pick up black wax. ULP won't give a similar result?

UP would be roughly similar in terms of correcting ability, but won't offer any protection (wax) like Black Wax does.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

But since I will be topping with ULW, wouldn't it be the same?

I have not used black wax so I can't comapre the correcting ability to UP. Black wax and UP are two different products for two different purposes. Black wax is an all in one that will clean, polish and protect. UP is a polish that offers some correcting ability. It has no protection capability. I would think UP has more correction than black wax. Hopefully someone chimes in who has knowledge of both products.

The way I seee it, I would think you get more correction with UP and of course longer lasting protection with UW than using black wax by itself. Can black wax be topped? Of course it can after 12-24 hours after application.

I would try a test spot with UP and polishing pad vs black wax and a polishing pad. Then you can decide which gives you the desired look.

Saw this the other day. This guy used black wax with a DA. His photos are at the bottom.
Although I recently switched to BF TPNS as my AIO, I had religiously been using Megs BW every 12-14 weeks since it's launch - by hand if I had time, b

You mentioned you had some road rash that you will 'buff out'. What do u mean by this? Isn't road rash effectively lots of mini stone chips?

Re: Need help maintaining my paint

The thing I keep raving about, because I learned it here (in the videos) and it was such a revelation to me, is there is "correction", a huge investment in time and trouble and back pain, and there is "daily maintenance", which should take less than a half-hour, if not 10 minutes or so.

To maintain your paint for months and months, DetailGk, I cannot rave enough about quik detailer and quik wax, which should match your DA wax, in your case, Ultimate. With older paint, you might very well compound too much, depending on the condition of the clear, and so you can rely on quik detailer and wax to reduce the swirls, at least temporarily (say a few days, depending on rain).

I'm not really disagreeing with the other guys, though. Just pointing out the difference between a correction mentality and a daily maintenance mentality
