  • Will using Ultimate Compound work good for polishing new Lacquer paint?

I am new to this Forum, and it is a great place!

I have been looking through some of the threads regarding this subject, and was hoping for some advice.

I finished painting my ugly old el Camino with black lacquer about 2 weeks ago, and am just waiting for another week or two to start the sanding and polishing.
20 years ago was the last time I have done any of this type of work.
Back then I used PPG DRX16 and DRX25 rubbing and polishing compounds after waiting 3 weeks, then wet sanding to 1200 grit.
Then after waiting for a few more months I used a product called Liquid Ebony and followed that up with Meguiar's wax.

After reading about the Ultimate Compound, I have been tempted to wet sand to 1500 or maybe to 2000 grit, and then use UC to to rub and polish the paint in one step.
If not UC in one step, does the M105 and the M205 work well for rubbing and then polishing lacquer?

Is there a product similar to, or better than the Liquid Ebony I have used in the past?

Would love to hear any Suggestions.

I do have a regular old school power buffer that I am planning on using for the process.

    Thanks!

First of all, welcome to the forum, Bruce!
Secondly, there's very, very few "ugly" El Caminos---they just have different levels of "character".
As for your question, I just wet sanded and buffed the roof of my '87 Camino a few months ago, using UC. It wasn't new lacquer (20+ years old) but UC worked well.
I took it to 2000 grit paper, then used a rotary buffer with UC and an Edge yellow pad, a very coarse foam, around 1000 rpm. After that, I followed it with UC and a Meguiar's yellow pad and then M80 as the final step before wax.
    Try it-you'll like it.

      Welcome to MOL
You can start sanding that thing now. You just don't want to seal it.

I wouldn't use UC, it's the consumer version of M105. Stick to the Professional line and the Solo Line is more designed for your paint. I like 86.
M105 will be your goto on sanding marks
      M205 for your final polishing
M7 for your LSP, Last Step Product.

Re: Will using Ultimate Compound work good for polishing new Lacquer paint?

        Welcome to MOL!

Liquid Ebony was a light duty polish with a lot of filling ability that left a very nice finish on black and other dark colored paints. If the paint you used on this El Camino is sort of an old school lacquer then odds are it's fairly soft; if so, and you're using a rotary buffer to remove your sanding marks, then Ultimate Compound will most likely do the trick. Even so, we don't actually recommend UC for use on a rotary, but that's not a "it will not work on a rotary buffer" statement but rather a "we developed it for consumer use and most consumers don't use rotary buffers so we didn't develop it with that tool in mind". Ultimate Compound is actually derived from M105 and we know several people who have used it with a rotary and gotten excellent results.

So..... after wetsanding this paint job, our recommendation would be to use either M105 or M100 with the rotary to remove the sanding marks, then switch to a foam finishing pad and M205 at very slow speed to remove any marks that may have been left by the compound and wool pad. Those two steps should leave you with an outstanding finish, ready to wax when the time comes.

Thanks BillyJack! Your el Camino is much nicer than mine..
I am glad that the UC worked well for you. I may end up doing just that.

Please wash me and Michael, thank you for your response.
I went to the meguiar's web site, and there are not retailers listed within 50 miles of me for the M105/205 products..

Please Wash me, you mentioned I can sand the car, just not seal it. Is polishing sealing it? I assume that the rubbing and polishing compounds seals the paint somewhat and does not allow the thinners to escape, is that true?

          Thanks all!

            PolishING isn't a pure polISH
Polishing is the "act of polishing something to a some".

A pure polish is basically an oil based polish. "something you put on something polished to bring out the shine" no protection.
            Make sense?
Compounds and polishes don't have wax or synthetic sealants in them so don't worry about that.

Do some searching on local availability of 105. Is there an Advance Auto Parts near you? They usually stock 105 and 205. I used UC since I just had to do a single panel, my roof. Look at post #11 in this thread, as it that lists the WalMarts that also stock 105: http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...hlight=walmart You can sand and buff all you want. Just stay away from waxes for a couple months.

Thanks Just Wash Me. Started wet sanding last night after I read your response.

BillyJack, thank you for the link. No Advance Auto nearby either
I will look at a few more places locally, and then look into getting some online.

                Have a great day!

Re: Will using Ultimate Compound work good for polishing new Lacquer paint?

There's no doubt that 105 is the prime choice for the job, but as I said earlier, don't hesitate to give UC a try. In my case, I made a last-minute decision to sand and buff my roof panel while prepping for a local show and happened to have UC on the shelf. I tried a test spot and was very pleased with the outcome, so I just continued to do the entire panel. I used a rotary for the first step and my Griot's D/A for the remaining steps. If I elect to do any more areas, I might even try using the D/A from the start. Just like painting, the key is in the preparation. I buffed many a car over the past 40 years using old-style compounds and wool pads to remove 600 grit scratches. Being able to refine the finish with 2000 to 3000 grit papers makes the compounding step so much easier than the "good old days".

Re: Will using Ultimate Compound work good for polishing new Lacquer paint?

105 is now sold at most auto parts store so call around.
Also UC is the cousin of 105. The formula is tweaked for the "average" consumer to "use safely".
So if you really "work" UC you'll get the power of 105 out of it.
UC will work, maybe just slower then 105.

Re: Will using Ultimate Compound work good for polishing new Lacquer paint?

So I could not find the 105 and 205 locally. I found the UC at Walmart, and thought I would give it a try.
I simply cannot believe how well this stuff works! There is light years difference between this product and the PPG stuff I used 20 years ago.
The last lacquer paint job i did 20 years ago was also black. PPG rubbing compound, polishing compound, wait a few months and liquid ebony and this stuff looks much better after just using the UC.
                      WOW.
Thanks for all your input. My best friend and mentor that helped me with my paint questions died a few years ago, and it was very nice to be able to get some advice from you fine people.
                      I appreciate you,

Thanks Stephan! I read through the information, but was reluctant to use the Thumbnail download. As luck would have it, I stumbled onto the new Apps feature of Google Chrome. Did a quick search and found the Pixlr Editor app to do the re sizing. Using the app I imported my picture, and along the top tool bar choose "Image", inside there is an "Image size". Choose 700 for the width, and it re sized the height for me automatically.

I had done a search for posting pictures, but the thread I came across talked more about using flicker and photo bucket. So thank you very much for steering me in the right direction
