Re: HELP!!! Black walnut stains on my paint, 105 won't touch them

I wish i was closer, but I am in the bay area.

I just bought a DA and will watch videos ect, but any tips for using specifically the 105 compound? How to tell when new compound is needed, the pad needs to be replaced, ect?

Find a local detailer to give a look at it?
For some people, M105 takes a bit getting used to it.
Just use a little bit, after the pad is primed.
Watch the videos, take you time and let the paint tell you what to do.

Ok so I will get the soft buff cutting pad. Then, assuming I still have clearcoat left, should I get the finishing pad or the polishing pad? Use the 205 compound after the 105 then wax?

I'd go with a MF pad, great cut and finish in one step, even with the 106.
Foam tends to mar paint and genrates a lot of heat.
The 5" MF Pad will cut quicker and better then foam ever could.

ok I talked to 3 different places today. The response of one was "dafuq?", another said 2000 grit, and another said try the DA. I am going out of town in a couple days and am not going to be able to do anything with it for a couple weeks...

I would honestly go with the 2000 or very carefully 1500 wet with a bit of soap of course, then 105 on a cutting pad. It will remove just the damaged area and polish out easily......

I actually got some spots out!

It took about 1.5 hours(!) using the 105 by hand but I got about 6 spots off the fender. They were all near or on body line creases so I would not have felt comfortable sanding or using the DA in those areas.

There are only a couple minor ones on the unibody, and a few on the trunk. The hood is really bad but I will be able to use the DA on that. It is going to take longer than sanding but I feel more comfortable doing it.

Woh woh woh... I realize these are bad stains on your paint, but how come no one has recommended moving to a stronger cleaner than M105? You don't want more cutting power you want more cleaning power. Try something simple like A12 Cleaner Wax before you rub through your clear trying to get this stuff off. I've seen A12 plow through awful stains that even the likes of D151 and Ultimate Compound didn't like.

                      Great to hear it Nick!.
Yes it does take time, sometimes hours tocorrectt paint defects.

What do you think makes a cleaner wax work?
                      it's compound or polish.
M105 is the strongest compound out there.
No cleaner wax is stronger at "cleaning" then a compound.

I'm referring to chemical cleaning ability vs abrasiveness. Unless I'm mistaken and Meguiar's uses the same cleaning chemicals across the board Would love to hear from Mr. Stoops as to the difference, if any, between their products with regard to chemical cleaning power.

I think you'll find the "cleaning" in A12 Cleaner Wax is mild abrasive cleaning, not chemical cleaning.

Really!? How is it that no one believes that there is a chemical cleaning component???

To help "see the light" I managed to dig up this quote from http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...l=1#post110421

Bold and red are the key points...

Again, I would love to know the differences, if any, of the cleaning chemicals used in different products and whether one carries a stronger cleaner vs something that's more heavily weighted towards cutting power.

We've been posting on this forum that it was a chemical cleaner only but I talked to Mike Pennington today about this and he said if fact that this product does contain some diminishing abrasives along with the chemical cleaners in this formula. We can't say for sure how we came to be under the impression that it this product was a chemical cleaner only because our habit is to seek out and absorbs information about car care products like a magnet is attracted to steel and it's not often we make a mistake like this, thus the reason for this announcement and update on our forum.

^^ Ok, but that was for DC Paint Cleaner, not A12?

My point is that there are chemical cleaners and not just abrasive materials that we need to be mindful of. It's no different than comparing soaps. Some are stronger than others. So using that logic, if there are chemical cleaning agents in the cleaner/compound (whatever term you'd like to apply) product then there would or should be different levels of chemical cleaning strength between different ones. All I'm trying to do is prevent someone from rubbing their paint to death with a strong cutting compound (which is amplified when using your hand on a single spot) just to remove an embedded stain when a mild abrasive with strong pore cleansing ability will do a better job.
