  • Correcting acura nighthawk black pearl on the cheap

    Hey guys,
I recently bought an 03 acura with nighthawk black pearl paint. Mechanically, the car is awesome, but cosmetically eh.
There's a ton of swirl marks all over the car. There is also one spot where the paint is not shiny and almost matte in finish. No bubbling or anything, I'm really hoping that isn't clear coat failure.

I've done a lot of reading, and have a bit of an idea of how to approach this. Any suggestions?

Additionally, I saw this guide which says that
Nbp paint is very delicate. Is my approach too aggressive?http://www.detailedimage.com/Ask-a-P...-pearl-part-1/

Finally, this is all being done by hand. Also important to note that I'm an absolute noob to detailing, I've :gasp: usually just taken my cars through automatic washes in the past.

    My original plan :
1st: wash with gold class wash
2nd: clay with meguiars clay bar kit
    3rd: polish with meguiars swirlx
    4th: wax with collinite 845

And for the interior, griots leather care.

However, the other day I saw the meguiars brilliant solutions paint restoration kit, which basically comes with everything I had originally planned to buy, subbing the swirlx and collinite with ultimate compound and meguiars wax. It was on sale for 20 bucks, compared to the 60ish bucks i was originally planning to spend. Also picked up zymol leather cleaner and leather conditioner on sale.

Is the kit a good approach? Will ultimate compound be too aggressive? Is there enough quantity for 1 or 2 washes /details? I would definitely like to spend 20 bucks vs 60 if possible. Also, I'll be honest, I don't really have the time to do regular detailings , this will probably be a one time thing and I'll take it through touchless washes afterwards.

Also, any supplies I need to buy that aren't in the kit? It comes with microfiber cloths and pads and seems like it should be enough to do everything I want.

    Thanks guys!

Any help guys? Also, I'm thinking of returning the zymol since I've seen some pretty eh reviews. Would the griots be a good choice for the leather?

It's always a good idea to clay and smooth the surface prior after you wash and prior to using a ultimate compound, polish or wax.

Meguiar's ultimate line is very good. You can't go wrong with it. The kit is good. You could also pick up a bottle of ultimate polish and try using that first before the compound on a test spot. If the polish is not getting the job done you can go with the compound, followed by the polish and wax. You will be happy with ultimate wax. I have used all three products by hand and by machine and achieved good results with both. Obviously much better by machine.

I have not used griots leather products so I can't help you there.

          Thanks for the advice guys!

Are you guys sure that Ultimate Compound is a good place to start? I ask because I saw this thread: http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...ed-up-my-paint

The guy has an Honda Civic with the same paint - Nighthawk Black Pearl - and a lot of people are saying he should have started with something less aggressive like SwirlX.

          Thanks!

I will have to reference the detailer's mantra here - Do a test section.
If you aren't getting the defects out, then you can move up the aggressiveness scale. Dial in a process that gets you the desired results after inspecting with several different light sources and then repeat for the rest of the car.

For example, you can start with Ultimate Polish. If that's not doing the job you can move up to SwirlX. If that's still not doing it you can go up to Ultimate Compound (I believe I have the right aggressiveness order).
Your test spot will show you if Ultimate Compound is leaving holograms. I have personal experience on the same type of paint and to be honest, I bet it will.
If you are stuck with something that won't clear up, Mike covered that in "The Challenge of Delicate Paint." ColorX (a cleaner wax on steroids) cleared it up nicely, but I would be surprised if Ultimate Polish doesn't do that.

Awesome, that "Challenge of Delicate Paint" thread really answered a lot of questions. Thanks for all the help everyone!
