  • Rock chip touch up or re-spray?

    2008 Mustang GT/CS

Had a run in with a dimwit that had his lawn mower turned the wrong way. Put 6-7 chips in the right side along the passenger door and rear quarter panel in addition to a small a chip on the side glass. The cost to repaint both panels, glass and vinyl side stripe was estimated at $1200. The lawn mower operator would be paying for this, not me. My question though is whether it is worth it? I could try to touch up the rock chips (Though I'll always be able to tell) Should I have any concerns about getting a third of the car pulled apart and repainted? I could do a touch up and live with it. On the other hand, there is one particular spot that was touched up very poorly by the previous owner that exists on the same panel that I would be repairing. Clearing that up would be a plus.

I worry about being able to tell that it has been repainted when looking at the rest of the car. I am probably the only one that will ever notice those chips. This is a daily driven car that just hit 50K miles. No panel on the car is completely devoid of imperfections. One day, I was planning on having it entirely re-sprayed so I was willing to live with some touched-up chips. Being offered a free respray of two panels has led to quite the dilemma tonight....

Should I have any additional concerns with matching since it is a metallic paint?

That looks like a nice car. I'd be getting the panels resprayed.

You'll always be able to see touch up paint to some extent. Any good painter will be able to match the color.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

So no concerns about being able to match the other panels?

I do plan on getting it all resprayed eventually but that will be more than a few years from now.

Most of the bodyshops around where I live have computers to make an exact paint match so it is not evident there was panel repair. If the one you normally go to doesn't have this program hopefully another will.

Personally I would ask for the money and then use Dr. Colorchip

Agreed. They look ideal for the Dr Colorchip product. It's a big area they want to repaint. If the colour is even a little off it will bug you forever. Dr Colorchip should blend in well and being a 'local' repair, ie just the chips themselves, it should be very hard to tell.

Thanks everyone on the responses. After reading these (and after talking to one more shop here in town), it is just not worth the hassle to repaint. Bring on the Dr!
