    Is there such thing as TOO MUCH WAX?

    Hey guys.

    I am new here. I just had a quick question about wax. I own a black car and live in a sunny place in cali. As you know it gets quite dusty and dirty...since I am a daily driver my car gets dirty quite quick. I usually have my car hand waxed every weekend. Now my question is people say that you should wax your car at least once every 2-3 months. However in my position I am hand waxing it every weekend.

    Does weekly hand waxing hurt my paint's finish or is it safe?

    While perfectly safe (if done correctly) there really isn't a big need to do so. As a time saver and to keep a very high gloss level on your car you might want to try Ultimate Quik Wax during your drying process when you wash the car. After doing a sheeting rinse (take the nozzle off the hose, turn the water pressure down and let a steady stream of water gently flow over the paint to sheet off the majority of water beads) simply mist a couple trigger pulls of UQW onto a panel and then dry that panel. Continue doing this while drying a panel at a time and you'll have put a nice coat of added gloss and protection to the finish in a matter of minutes.

      Like Michael said, there's no harm if done correctly.

      Not sure if your paint is metallic, however some people claim too many "layers" of wax can mute the appearance of the metallic flakes in the paint.

        There are so many factors which impact the duration of he wax. How about the wax that you use? Cleaner wax has some cleaning ability that remove some existing wax. Pure wax, on the other hand, will go on top on the previous layer, to a certain extent.

        Wax once a week is certainly too often, maybe even a waste of products. I would take Michael's suggestion, use UQW in between waxes.

        About the question of too much wax, you should do the full 5-step program maybe once a year. Clay and clean will remove all existing wax so you can start over again.

            As we discussed in another thread, your procedure is a LOT of work (or money), and yes, I think hand-washing and hand-waxing so frequently with no other prep has got to be damaging your paint, your wallet, your weekends, or all three. This is what they mean above by "if done properly". It sounds like you're just going to a staffed drive-thru commercial touchless washer and waxer/buffer, then washing it even more when it gets a little dusty? Yes, that's "too much", IMHO. You seemed to say in the other thread you'd actually done a correction?, but a drive-thru wash-n-wax every week is not correcting anything. You're just buffing feel-good wax over an uncorrected surface, then washing that wax right off with further washes between weekends.

            I know how hard it is to let go and trust a new process, but if you first start with a real machine correction (wash, clay, compound, polish, wax) and then rely on QD/QW instead of traditional washing (unless the car is, like, muddy), you will keep your free time (or wasted money) and be very happy with a show car finish that lasts a LOT longer than a week! There is no way LA's mostly sunny weather warrants near daily washing and weekly waxing just for dust. The "California Duster" is so-named for that reason

            My black car is a non-garaged daily driver. I did my correction myself using Gold Class Wax in mid-late February and have made it these 10 weeks so far (and counting), including the entire Southeast pollen season, mind you, with only one traditional hand-wash with suds-n-mitt and no further traditional waxings. That wash was because I was caught in a nasty rain storm on a return road trip and the car was greasy with road grime. Otherwise, I've only rinsed it or waterless-washed it with QD. I finish it off with QW very regularly, you see, and the car always looks show-car detailed. In fact, it was in a local car show last Saturday, and serious show car guys I talked to couldn't believe it was a non-garaged daily driver. I joked that I'd only washed it once in two months
