  • Mequiars Micro D/A & Jet Black BMW__Help please

I have a 2011 Jet Black BMW I'm going to attempt to correct the best I can. I also have the kit with the MF pads and D300 & D301 to be used with a PC7424. I also have a few black LC foam pads. I did a small test spot using the D300 & cutting disc followed by D301 & finishing disc. The results seemed very cloudy. Alot/most of the defects were removed for as quick as I did it, but the color looked very cloudy. I don't know if that is what hazing is or not. The color of the area that I did also seemed alot less black than the rest of the car along with being cloudy. Could someone help me out with the correct process for this color(jet black) with what I have, or do I need 1 more product like po85rd or something. I have only corrected one other vehicle ever, and that was my graystone metallic chevy and it seemed whatever I did to that looked good. Anybody have a process that they think will work for me I'd love to here it. I do not expect a 100% correction but I would like it to have a deep glossy black after I'm done.

It certainly sounds like you have a significant amount of hazimg caused by the aggresiveness of the microfiber pads. I would try to use the compoumd amd finishimg wax with foam pads and xheck the results. They have less cut and will pribably remove the defects and create that gloss you are looking for.

I have read about quite a few people who have used this combination on this color. They usually have one extra step somewhere, I just don't know where. All I have are the MF pads and a few of the black LC pads. Would I need to get a different kind of pad?

A test spot with the D300 or #01 with the Black Pad wouldnt be a big deal.

LC black pad along with any finishing polish (such as M205 or Ultimate Polish) should clear the micro-marring you have. Jet black paint is known to be very soft and usually requires 2-3 polishing steps to get it perfect.

If you have a walmart close by, I would swing by and pick up a bottle of Ultimate Polish and use that with the LC black pad. Let us know how it works.

Try the black pad and note the speed you are using, slow the speed of the buffer to work the polish if you are doing as suggested above.

So the consensus is to do a test spot with D300/MF pad followed by Meguiars #01/black foam pad. Should the D301 not be used at all? Is that a wasted step with Jet Black(D301/MF pad) or should it be used after the D300 and before the #01/black pad? Are you guys suggesting a two step or three step process? Makes no difference to me, just need a direction......

Hmm.. Little typo in my post it looks like... Was supposed to say D300 or D301 with the Black pad....

Gotcha, that's what I thought as well....Would you suggest picking up another polish, like the ultimate polish suggested above, to finish down with to ensure clear results, I have no problem with that-

                      I mean.. its possible.

If the Finishing MF Disc and the D301 Finishing Polish is leaving some marring, then something needs to go milder. (assuming good technique and everything.)

You can go with the same liquid, and a milder pad.
                      Or same pad, milder liquid.
Or milder pad and milder liquid.

I would tend to pick the pad first for a test spot.. and esp since it is all on hand.

Ult. Polish is an option... though you may need to use a polishing pad to get some defect removal with it.

I was able to complete the task with just D300/ D301 and MF cutting/ finishing discs on Jet Black X3 (I topped D301 with UPW later):

D301 cleared DA haze nicely. That non-metallic color is really haze and swirl sensitive.

Thanks greg03, I've actually read this same thread of yours many times wondering what you did different from me. I wonder if I am using too much pressure with the PC7424. From what I read while using the MF pad and D300 you should put just enough pressure to where the disc still is spinning, but spinning fairly slow. Then with the D301, use even lighter pressure, meaning I will have even more spinning of the disc. Of course when using the D301, you will have a lower power setting on the PC7424, All this sound right?

That's correct. You don't want to stop disc rotation as it's necessary for paint/ defect removal. Too much pressure will lead to extreme heat build-up, serious haze on softer paints and faster disc wear-out. With DA Microfiber Correction System arm speed is the best aggressiveness controller.

I apply less down pressure and use faster arm speed with D301 (about 2"/ second).

My current car has Deep Sea Blue Metallic paint and it's much easier to maintain.
