  • Water spots and Oxidation Help

I have been a member of this forum for a few months now and have been fortunate enough to have attended the detailing 101 class with Mike Phillips. I have learned a tremendous amount from the class and also the people on this forum. I can't thank you all enough.

I have purchased a G-100, also #80 and #83. I have used the #80 on two of my vehicles with great results. Some of my friends have asked me if I would like to detail there cars.

They even want to pay me!!!

I said, sure I would love to. The only cars that I have done are family cars and the paint on their cars have been in good condition and I have been able to tell them with complete confidence that I will make their car look fantastic!!!

Here is the first car that I would like to tackle outside of my family. To me it looks like it's in very bad condition and I am not able to give my friend a confident answer on results. So I told him I would take it to the Meguiar's forum and see what advice I can get from the pro's.

The spots are from sprinklers and he said it has looked like this for about a year. He also wants to keep the pin stripe. It is a tape pin stripe and is very brittle in some areas. I scratched a small part off with my fingernail. I don't think it would stand up to the PCDA and #83. Really need help on this one.

Here are some photos. Let me know what you think. Of course it will start off with the usual, wash and clay. By the way, these photos were taken after he had washed it.

    Now for the Swirls!!!

    Am I lucky or what?

    Hi Mike,

First, thank you for the kind words about Meguiar's and especially our forum, there are many experienced people that hang out here always willing to help out.

As for a plan of attack,

"You never know what you can do until you try"

For this door, I would suggest a "Test Spot", using the M80 Speed Glaze only. If you can, carefully tape off one half of the door and then using the M80 Speed Glaze, with the W-8006 foam pad on the G100 Dual Action Polisher on the 5.0 setting, thoroughly polish one half using overlapping motions, taking your time and working the product till it's almost gone but you are still leaving behind your path of travel a wet film.

Then remove and inspect. Meguiar's always teaches,

"Use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

If the M80 Speed Glaze will restore the finish to an acceptable level then you should stick with it for the entire car and afterwards apply two thin coats of wax.

If the M80 Speed Glaze doesn't produce the results you're looking for, then you can always substitute a more aggressive product such as the M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish.

When buffing around the pinstripe, buff up to the pinstripe, but don't buff directly on top of the pinstripe as it is frail.

Best of luck with this one and we can't wait to see the after pictures!

Thanks Mike for the quick response,

This will become my plan of attack. I will take progress and final photos and post them when finished.

I'm curious to see if that will remove the water spots.

I worked on an SL500 with waterspots and the G100 with 83 did not remove them. It took the rotary, 83 and cutting pad to get the job done.

Hopefully, yours will work out well. Mike has given you a good plan of attack that you can use on other jobs as well.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I started out with the 2 bucket wash system and I thought I would try the car wash strips. I have never used them before.
Lots of suds and they couldn't be any easier to use.

I followed Mike's plan of attack. After I clayed the whole vehicle and started with the Speed Glaze, all I can say is WOW!!! I couldn't believe my eyes when I did the test spot on the door.

Then I did the test spot on the hood also.

Then the finished product after a fresh coat of NXT Tech Wax.

Even though it wasn't perfect in my eyes, my friend couldn't get over how great it looked. Thank's Mike for the great direction you have given me. My friends are lining up for their cars to be detailed.

            Great work corvetmike!

This is day and night difference in the before and after...

            After

So did you end up using any of the M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish?

Or were you able to remove the defects using only the M80 Speed Glaze?

I used the #83 on a small section of the hood that was really bad. It looked like there were some deep etchings and I didn't want to take a chance if something went wrong. I couldn't see a big difference in that section, so I just stayed with the #80.

Have you ever try to use ditilled vinegar. After you wash a car apply vinegar to car with a sponge then rinse off after 1 minute. Do one section at a time and wash the car again to make sure to remove the vinegar. You still have to polish and wax after.

                              Wow!!! Great transformation!!!

It never ceases to amaze me just big a difference using the right products, tools and techniques can make on a black paint finish. Well done!!!
