  • What to do after several washes? Correcting fine swirls.

Hey folks! First time posting here on MOL. I've been doing lots of reading here, picked up a Megs DA and all the goodies to go with it. I purchased a 2011 GT500 race red with white stripes back in May out of NC and exported it to Canada. The previous owner was obviously skilled in auto detailing, it looked brand new when I picked it up. Not a swirl anywhere! I've spoken with him and he used Megs Gold Class carnuba wax. I'm starting to notice the odd swirl or fine scratch here and there and I'm wondering what I should do to correct it back to perfection.

My wash routine NOW is as follows. I rinse the car in the early AM before sunrise with hose pressure outside my garage. I have two buckets with grit guards, one with Megs gold class soap(5 cap fulls) the other with clean water. I foam gun the roof and windows then wash with a rinsed MF wash mitt, rinse the roof and windows and wash mitt then proceed to the next section repeating the process. Once the vehicle is all washed I pull it in the garage and dry with 2 waffle type dry cloths. Once dry I go over it with Megs quick wax and 2 Cookie Monster soft cloths to eliminate any water streaks. This has worked well but in full sun I do see the odd swirl, probably before I got the grit guards and educated myself on here about the 2 bucket method. I want to correct these fine scratches.

I was thinking I should wash, dry, and mild clay with ultimate quick detailer to ensure it's properly prepped. Then what should I do? DA with Megs ultimate polish on a grey polish pad followed by 2 coats of Megs Techwax 2.0 on a grey polish pad? I don't have any liquid Gold Glass but have a brand new bottle of the Tech 2.0

    Thanks for any help.

If the swirls are pretty light and you're trying to keep the cost low and not go through the process of ordering products online you could go with some SwirlX on a polishing pad. Then follow up with the ultimate polish on another pad or the same pad after cleaning (remember, the secret is working clean and avoiding cross contamination). Finally top it with Techwax 2.0 for protection. And if swirlX isn't enough for the removal of the swirls you can always bump up to Ultimate Compound.

I have ScratchX, SwirlX,UP,UC,GC paste and TW2.0 Liquid wax. I also have several pads that I wrote on what I had used them for so I can keep them for the same product. I just wasn't sure if I could get away with the Ultimate Polish to correct the swirls then the 2 coats of Techwax 2.0? The car looks really good, I'm just being super fussy but I might put it in a car show later this month and I want it looking the best I can.

I'm not sure, but you may want to use some more soap. You want 1 ounce per gallon of water. Since the soap acts as a lubricant, you want to make sure you have enough.

The Ult. Polish may be enough in your case, it can remove very fine swirls, esp if the paint is softer.

You dont want to clay with UQD, you want the regular QD.

I think there's enough soap because the foam gun lays it on thick. I'll start off with the Ult. polish. What's the difference between detailers? I'll have to grab some of the regular QD before I start tomorrow. Thanks for the replies.

The UQD leaves a slick polymer coating on the surface to help water run off for a bit.

So besides more expensive, you dont really want to spray the dirt to remove with a slick polymer coating first.

Switch to using a waterless wash.
If you use a waterless wash corectly on a maintained car will eliminate wash mit scratches from bucket washing.
If you don't want to do that try washing with mirco fibers.
I hate mits and only use mf's if I bucket wash
