Haze on black paint. Is it too late?

I was looking for some opinions on a car I just bought. I have never had a vehicle with haze on the paint and I wanted to see if you think this was in a fixable condition.

If it can be fixed what is my course of action?

Unfortunately that looks like clear coat failure. It can be fixed..........by repainting the car. Sorry for the bad news

Have you tried UC with a DA?

You can still try Ultimate Compound on a small area where the haze is, if the paint shines and has more clarity in it, then do the entire panel and maybe follow up with ultimate polish or Deep Crystal polish or M07 Show car glaze. And while you're at it, why not do the entire car? I'm sure that if you see great results you'll feel really motivated to do the entire car.

I've seen plenty of black cars that look like this and it's just grime built up on the paint, or some oxidation that could be fixed. However, it can also be the clearcoat failing, like many have mentioned. What steps have you taken on it so far, if any?

I have taken no action so far. I just bought the car a few days ago. It is a 2001. I just wanted to make sure I didn't cause anymore damage by taking the wrong action.

I will test out the Ultimate Compound in a small area and report back the results.

Here is half of it so far. It seems like a light haze comes back after a couple hours, but no where near the old haze. The UC does not seem as abrasive as I would have liked, it seems more like a fine polish.

Unfortunately the clear coat has been compromised. The 'haze' you're seeing is the paint reverting to the "pre-compounded" condition. You can make it look better temporarily, but any attempt short of a repaint will not last long at all.

The longest lasting "temporary fix" I have seen is through the use of Meguiars M07 Showcar Glaze. It has more oils in it than a compound (being a pure polish) and tends to stick around a little longer than most other things you can try although that will just delay the inevitable. A repaint is the only option here.

The 'haze' is actually a lack of clear coat. It's worn through or been damaged in some way.

I was surprised that there was no black paint on the applicater pad, this made me believe that my clear coat was still there.

So it sounds like a heavy wet sanding and new clear coat would not fix the problem then?

Well, then the clear may still be there, but it is completly dead.
