  • Tips, hints, tricks? 1st time DA and MF kit

Would love any tips on this combo?
PC7424xp, and the 5.5 mf kit on a very swirled black Mercedes.
Speeds, hand motion, work time etc!!

I also have a bottle of ultimate compound. Is it stronger than the compound supplied with the kit?

      Littlehandegan,

I like working on black cars and here is what works best for me. Forgive me if I'm telling you what you already know. First and foremost start with a clean car. Everything you do from that point on depends on the foundation upon which you build and a speck of dirt can ruin your day when using a power buffer. Use a high quality automotive soap and use a quality mitt. If you have access to the supplies for the "two bucket method" use them. Black paint will show the ill effects of poor washing techniques.

Next clay the car after getting it spotlessly clean. Clay will remove bonded contaminates. Even if your car is right of the box new, it may have bonded contaminates from sitting in the dealer's lot or riding in the train to the dealership from the factory. That smooth finish will the base for all the work that follows.

Next set up a test area a 2 foot by 2 foot area to test your process. Develop a good technique and process in that 2X2 and then move on to the rest of the car. Using the D300 product, prime the pad and apply a small amount of product. Set your PC to speed 5. Most of the instructions you read will say speed 4, but those instructions are usually for the Meguiar's buffer which is perhaps a better buffer than the PC. Now moving slowly and with moderate downward pressure do the half-overlapping buffing pattern on your test area.

Wipe off the correction compound and examine your results. If you're happy, move on; if not, increase the downward pressure and slow down your arm speed a bit. Get a feel for the arm speed, downward pressure and buffer speed that give you successful results and move on to the next 2X2 area.

I would strongly suggest viewing all of Meguiar's videos. The key to a successful project is shown in those videos.

There is little need to use the Ultimate Compound as the D300 and various buffer techniques (slower buffer speed, slower or faster arm speed and light to heavy pressure) will most likely achieve the results you desire and can expect from Meguiar's product and of course from your hard work.
