  • Meguiar's Headlight & Spot Repair Kit Sanding Issue

I've worked on about 4 pairs of headlights now using the Meguiar's headlight and spot repair kit. I went through all the sanding steps; using an interface, the sanding discs provided, and the mini air DA sander. After I finished the second car I noticed I had pigtails in the lens cover, this has continued to happen with every car I've worked on since. I've tried different ways to try to correct the problem; by trying to use different levels of sanding discs and by making sure I wiped the lens down thoroughly every time. When I tried to sand out the pig tails with the lighter grit it has helped a little but it doesn't completely take them out and well, good enough isn't good enough for me. I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts on why this started happening and if there are any tips I can try to keep this from happening again. Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jason

Re: Meguiar's Headlight & Spot Repair Kit Sanding Issue

Hi Jason, when we think about pig tails, we need to think first about where they come from. They come from the sanding disc loading up with different grits. From my experience, they typically come from the 300, 500, and 800 grits. Probably, more often than not the 300 and 500 load faster because they are removing most of the plastic coating. You are correct that you really need to keep these discs clean with any type of towel after every pass. Additionally, you are also correct that you NEED to take your time and not rush the 1000 and 3000 steps with damp sanding paper as these 2 steps are the most important steps for removing the pig tails.

Make sure your rotary is running fast during the M105 stage. You need the speed to remove the the sanding marks and any lite pig tails.

It sounds like your doing everything right, just incorporate the following tips we discussed above. Good luck!
