  • Need advice, please

We recently bought a 1999 Honda CR-V, which is not only white, but also looks as though it has never had any TLC - maybe a run through the spray wash every week, if that, and not garaged in the S.E. Texas heat, humidity, etc. Add to that the fact that it was towed around the country behind a motorcoach... you get the picture, right? Repainting has been discussed, but is not in the budget until next year. I think I can do a pretty good job of cleaning it up and protecting from further degradation, but don't have a block of time to dedicate to doing it all at once.

So I washed it all up, carefully removing all the Texas mold and gunk from nooks and crannies, removed the spare tire from the back hatch, and clayed that area. Used my 7424, CCS orange pad (old), and UC. Was satisfied with the results, but knew without a doubt that combo wasn't going to work on the front end! Experimented on the hood with same formula, (clay bar first) and the pad was filthy after 2 passes. Stop, wash pad, wait for it to dry... get on the internet and order more. I now can't afford a better camera because I've purchased stock in Meg's and Lake Country Mfg! (Tried taking pics to post here, but can't get the photo to show what my eyes see - white, remember?)

New weapons came in the mail, so I tried the 7424/M105/CCS orange pad on the same hood section. Paint sucked up the M105 before I could turn the 7424 switch off! Spritzed the area w/ pad lube and managed to get the M105 cleaned up. Looked better but doesn't feel smooth yet. Now what? Have M84, M83, M205, UC, UP in the arsenal. Am thinking about switching to the 9227, using M83 w/ orange CCS pad. Problem, again, is time. I have about one hour each evening to work on it. If I can get a front end section compounded to my satisfaction, should I follow right away with a polish and wax? Or is it okay to leave it sit outside through the humid night and hot, sunny day until I can get back to it?

Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

So, after compounding, the paint still felt very rough?

Was it shiny or still very dull?

I would go with Ultimate Polish on a polishing pad now and see if you get the results you want.

You can leave the wax until you are all done or you can wax each section at a time. If doing the latter, when all completed, throw a second coat on the car just so the entire car is playing with the same protection.

Is the clay coming off clean, or dirty when done?

Are you getting white on your pad?

The M105 left a fairly smooth, shiny surface - just dried so quickly and was difficult to remove . Took a clean orange CCS pad to it, mopped up the dirty residue, then a MF cloth. Looks okay to polish with UP. Just trying to get a feel for what to do with the rest of the front end - thought maybe a rotary w/ M83 would be just as effective as 7424 w/105, yet faster.

No white on the pads I used for compounding on the hood, but some test spots I did by hand showed white from quarter panels and rear hatch. Maybe I'm just not seeing white because the pads get grungy so fast...

Haven't yet tried claying the areas I compounded - need to get a new clay bar (or 3). Is shot from the initial job on the front end. Wouldn't have thought of it either, so thanks for the tip, Murr!

I'll do another pass with a clean clay bar tomorrow. Then think I'll hit the clean spots with UP and wax like Shawn suggested. Can't be doing too badly, though - he former owner saw the compounding results yesterday, and asked if she could buy her car back!

What clay bar are you using. If its smooth surface, you need to bump it up to mild or aggressive. Smooth surface is great for minor surface imperfections only

Yeah, the Blue Clay may be a good idea, if you can get some.

Also may be a good idea for a bit stronger of a wash, like using some Dawn for instance.

If the paint seems dry, you may need to use an 'oilier' product like #80, or Ultimate Compound, or try just putting some pure polish on the area overnight first.
