  • I'm having trouble wiping off Ultimate Compound

I am trying to use my Griots Garage DA for the first time and having a little bit of a problem. I'm using Lake Country pads, the white polishing pad with Ultimate Compound. I'm using it on my 65 Mustang which has fairly badly oxidized white paint (single stage I believe). First I washed with gold class car was, then clayed the whole car. Then I did a test spot with Swirl X and one with Ultimate Compound, the UC looked much better so that is what I'm going over the whole car with.

Here's my problem, I'm not able to wipe off all the UC with my microfiber towel. I'm working small areas at a time, and I think I'm using the right amount of product (one ring of product around the outer part of the pad). I've read other threads saying this can be caused by either not working it long enough or working it too long. I've tried going longer and shorter and still have this problem. Most of it wipes off, but there are places that won't wipe off. If i rub it with my bare finger it comes right off, or if I mist it with Quck Detailer it also comes right off.

Any suggestions? Or should I just keep misting it to get it to wipe off?

P.S. after the UC I plan to apply Ultimate Polish and two thin coats of NXT 2.0 Wax.

I have found I can just touch the pad on the machine to the stubborn area, and other products will wipe off.

Probably will have that, as UC isnt as high in oils as some products.

i use 3-4 pea size dots. also you should be using lc orange pad. the white pad is for a polish like swirl x. I do 4-6 passes with ultimate compound then wipe off. it comes right off. the only time it won't is if i let it dry or if i am direct sun and the paint is hot. sometimes there are parts that don't wipe off easily, so use a quick detailer just as you have been doing. also flip the mf towel and change them. they will get gummed up with residue as will your lc pads. to clean pads google, "cleaning on the fly" with a terry cloth towel.

As said above LC orange light cutting pad is a better match for UC unless you deal with paint being on softer side.

When you finish your section buffing you still should have some thin film of product on paint surface. Wipe it off right away.

When dealing with heavily oxidized paint it can be beneficial to use a product like M07 before attempting to remove the oxidation with a compound. Using M07 adds lots of oils to the paint. The absence of these oils is the oxidized paint you are trying to remove.

That layer of paint is absorbing a lot of the moisture out of your product and using a pure polish will help to eliminate this.

I've recently been polishing a 40' motorhome that is heavily oxidized that I just don't have the time to go over with a pure polish like M07. I would work my section with M105 and the rotary making sure not to let the product dry and in the time it took for me to set the buffer down portions of the M105 had already dried, from the dry paint absorbing that remaining moisture.

You can continue to use quick detailer to remove stubborn product as long as you aren't buffing till the product dries.

That sounds like something I might try. A couple of questions:
            1. I don't have M07, would Ultimate Polish work just as well for the before the Ultimate Compound? Maybe this is just an excuse for me to go buy the M07.

            2. If I use a polish before the UC, should I then apply another coat of polish after the UC and before waxing? Or is the original polish coat good enough?

I remember Michael Stoops talking about using the SMAT polishes on single stage paints, but I cannot find his comment. Perhaps someone else can track it down.

Badly oxidized single stage paint is usually also very dry and it can quickly pull the lubricating moisture out of whatever is applied to it. This can then end up making the product dry too quickly and even become gummy in extreme cases. The recommendations here to use something like M07 first, or even Ultimate Polish as you surmise, are good ones. But you could also try switching over to M80 or even M83 as both are quite rich in polishing oils (M80 more so, but with less cut than M83) and therefore may prove to be much more user friendly on this paint.

Situations like this always take me back to a certain Ferrari 360 Modena that caused M105 to turn to a heavy, gooey mess that was almost impossible to wipe off. M80 was a dream on that same car.

Single stage paint can be great fun to work on, but it can pose some unique challenges and may require you to alter your process and/or technique at times.

Based on the advice above I bought a bottle of M07 today and applied it tonight. We'll see how the UC goes tomorrow now.

Re: I'm having trouble wiping off Ultimate Compound

I had a similar experience on clear coat paint that was heavily oxidized. The first couple of passes with UC were a bit on the difficult side to wipe off but after the oxidation was mostly removed the UC wiped right off with little effort. I would guess like posted here that the paint was sucking the moisture out of the compound...

Re: I'm having trouble wiping off Ultimate Compound

Putting down the M07 before the UC worked great! Last night I finished up going over the whole car with UC, and it went on and wiped off much much better. I had no problems wiping off whatsoever. Thanks for the great advice.

Now its on to the UP, then a coupe of coats of wax.
